Food Stamps

The latest statistics from DCF show 127,000 Duval County residents -- 15 percent of the population -- are now receiving food stamps, and that includes nearly one out of every four children.Never thought it would happen to us,but thank god it is there.It is good to help you get by until a job comes along,but not as a permanent lifestyle.

Well, food stamps don't provide healthy alternatives; to make the allotted stamps last, you have to buy crap like pastas, which make you fat and unhealthy. But if you do it right, you can sustain yourself and I hope most people are grateful for food stamps.

There is nothing bad about using food stamps unless you are using them fraudulently. They provide a valuable resource for people who are unable to feed themselves.

I want to ask you can you survive without the help of foodstamps should your life be turned upside down? How many children do you have? or how many children did you provide TOTAL care for? Could you survive without the help of food stamps if you had a heart attack, battled blood clots in your jugler, blood clots in your lungs, husband has to have his leg cut off, could you survive waiting for the 6 months to pass, before you saw one penny of disability? without the help of foodstamps? And now put on top of that the death of your mother that you have to help pay for because your family is so nice to understand you are dead broke? Yes, I say dig in a little deeper but come on.. I couldn't save money while I worked for many many years because I had 4 children to take care of. I didn't matter, they did, and they still do.

Only 15 percent of the population in Duval is on Food Stamps, I guess the Federal Government has a lot of work left to do to increase that number. It is very difficult to control what people are “ALLOWED” to eat if you are not buying it for them.

I was greatful that they were there when I needed them. I had been going through chemo back in 2004 and could not work during the time I was going through that. I had a little income but not enough to purchase all the food I needed to feed my daughter. I don't get them anymore but it is nice to know they are there should I ever need them again. And I hope I do not need them again. After having several health problems I was able to start working again in 2007.

the cash assistance program needs work and sometime there are long gaps between benefits because of red tape
