If we cut back on personal use of the patrol vehicles when the officers are off-duty then we would be able to hire even more patrolmen

A few dollars in saved fuel would not even come close to enough savings to add even 1 new officer.

Sheriff Rutherford said the cost of hiring, training, and equipping a new officer for their first year is about $100,000 per person. That makes the first-year cost of these 40 new officers about $4 million.

Obviously, the cost in the following years is lower, because the officer can continue to use much of his or her gear, and there's no big up-front costs for paying trainers' salaries and so on.

The initial $300,000 is intended to jump-start the training so that JSO doesn't have to wait until a budget is settled in September or later to start the hiring process, Rutherford told me.

First of all thats not how it works. The city council must budget for each officer. Officers are hired on with the knowledge that they are issued a take home car that they can use off duty. It is part of their employment package. When you were hired at your current job you took it knowing you would get a certain salary, medical, 401K, or whatever other benefits you may have. Thats what you agreed upon when you signed on for the position. The take home cars attract qualified candidates to the job. Why else would anyone go to college for four years and take a job starting out at $37,500 where you put your life on the line for a bunch of ungrateful citizens who want to knock you down at every turn.

That actually sounds like a good idea to me. It may make it a little more uncomfortable for the scumbags in there. That alone is a deterrent to crime. As a bonus, we get more officers on the streets to remove the scumbags. Thats what you call a Win Win.

In addition when you have that car and the badge for that matter it means that you are a JSO 24/7. You can be on your way to wherever and if something goes down you are "Suppose" to respond. Also I am glad the jails are less filled, keep killing them thugs and save us taxpayers some money.

I agree we need a lot more, and it takes a long time to get them out to the streets, but then we do want them to be properly trained, and prepared for anything the community sends their way. God Speed and good luck to all of them.

Am I missing something, is dirtyduval-net and Sturdivant_Slim post being removed? I see reply to them but not the post.

that's real smart. take money from the jail when they are overcrowded, and according to officer's they work short handed all the time. the jail does not get money from the o.s.s. program (operation safe streets) when they bring in more people, but they want to take money from the jail.

And get Harry outta office and get someone who can help keep them off the streets once they are caught, and then we can actually walk down the streets w/o having to worry about being hit by a stray bullet or being robbed...

how much did Rutherford cost when he put the convicted officer (federal conviction) back on that had been fired,, he has 19 uears. so now he has served his sentence, intervention, got rehired, got his senority back so he works one year and retires, and we pay him rest of his life.. why didnt we take his money to hire a young one.

harry shorstein is a tool and is partly responsible for any crime committed by someone whom he has let out in the past with no punishment for violent crimes.

Again I hope this is never coming out of my pay check. I hate to even think another I don't know what kind of cops to call them. They do nothing for the north side nothing.

Don't blame the SAO. They can't help it that JSO brings them unprosecutable cases.
