Unless you want to be taken, please do not use the services of Mark Matey. After 2 visits the Dr announced "oh by the way, did you know that the boot you are wearing cost over $500 and is not covered by your insurance?" I work in a medical office and we would NEVER issue medical devices or services without first authorizing benefits for our patients and informing them of the cost of materials and services. Would you want to hire someone to preform a service for you and not know what the fee is until after the job is completed??? We HIRE doctors and they work for us. Why is it that doctors and STAFF are so out of tune with their patients? Do they think that everyone has an unlimited amount of money and no matter the charge we are expected to pay it? And in this case, even before the claim was filed or a bill was sent, they asked for payment!!!! I can assure you this is no way to operate a medical office. This is a major contributing factor as to the failure of our healthcare system. How do these people sleep at night knowing how they treat their patients and how would they feel if they were treated the same way? Wake up and care for your patients, people, we have a choice to hire you and fire you and needless to say you are fired!

Sounds like your doctor operates a desperate practice.
I agree that a lot of this goes on in this industry and it's becoming more prevalent. No question it adds to the health crisis that we are dealing with.
If you work in a medical office, it would seem that you would have an idea that this happens in this industry.
I have always thought and believed that doctors receive bonuses, vacation trips or other incentives for "prescribing brand name drugs", hardware or benefits to their patients.
My parents are elderly and they are prescribed "equipment" that just sits around not used and apparently not needed but are receiving a nice bill, which Medicare takes care of most, which of course means that the tax payer is paying.
They also are prescribed to only buy a specific brand, no generic, even from a respected US drug store...like Walgreens or CVS.
Our health system is being run by the money hungry thieves, same as our financial industry.
It's interesting that most all new construction has stopped, except the "MEDICAL INDUSTRY"....go by Memorial Hospital on University at Beach. As of today 2-27-10, they have the big cranes in the parking lot building more and more and more.
They ain't hurtin!

I have been treated by Dr Matey on several occasions and this does not sound like him at all. He has great bedside manners and his staff has always been sweet and strives to meet the needs of the patients. Every patient that I have spoken to about Dr Matey has has nothing but nice things to say. Also, it is the PATIENT'S responsibility to ask for prices regarding items given from the office.

I was treated by Dr. Matey for 2+ years. I was seen by him monthly and I was self pay. He set a very reasonable fee for my visits which were extremely affordable. He and his staff have always treated me with the utmost respect. Sometimes you think of going to the doctors office as a pain but it was always a pleasant experience. Sometimes you the patient must ask the questions. Also you should always know what is and is not covered by your health insurer. These days you can't take anything for granted.

It sounds to me as if someone had a large deductible and wasn't very happy when they realized their insurance sucks. Assuming you did need the "boot", this you did not dispute, I don't see your point. You don't see that they have hundreds of patients and you don't feel the need to know what your insurance will pay or not pay. If you truly worked in a Doctor's office you should have known that the amount the doctor is paid has nothing to do with the charges the doctor submits. It has everything to do with the insurance the patient has paid for. In other words your mad at the wrong people. I actually do work in a medical office and know that the fees we charge have nothing to do with the amount we eventually make. The more you pay for your insurance the more they pay for you, which today seems like not very much. Sorry but you learned a lesson. You should know your own insurance better than your doctor.

This is exactly the same experience I had with Dr. Tillo. Comes on like a friendly neighbor and then puts a boot you and doesnt even tell you the price.
He had me coming until I just had had enough and quit going. I was like a spider in his web

Completely RUDE and unprofessional. I have had the same insurance for 3 years, I've seen a podiatrist and so have co-workers and colleagues of mine, so imagine my surprise when I get to the podiatrist and they tell me I'm not covered. I called my insurance and verified that I'm 100% covered. I informed the office staff there that I'm covered as well. Well Dr. Matey himself comes from the back and tells me he doesn't believe me, and he won't see me unless I pay $300 up front. He then goes on to tell me very rudely "I've been screwed to many times before" and that me and his staff aren't on the same page. What kind of unprofessional jerk tells a patient something like that. I told him I'd just go somewhere else. Since then I have been seen by a podiatrist and the entire visit was covered. I will never go back to Mark Matey's office... TRUST ME, STAY FAR AWAY
Cant believe any of this

I searched for years to find a podiatrist who wasn't money hungry or knife happy. Dr. Matey is professional, compassionate and kind. He explained why my foot had the issues I had, then informed me that IF I had surgery, what I could expect. Not one mention of cost. Only pain management and recovery time etc. he sees many patients and I was surprised by how he remembered personal things we had discussed- such as my job woes etc. he genuinely cares. His wound care knowledge is phenomenal! I recommend him to anyone who needs a podiatrist! I have, however had issues with some of his staff, but that was few and far between. He was my dr. For two years and I am planning on going back for a different issue. Can't wait to see him again! I know he will give me the same professional service as before!

I have been a patient of Dr. Matey for many years and have found him and his staff to be very considerate and kind. When I've needed shoes, they always pre- certify with my insurance company that I'm covered BEFORE I order them.

I'm a male, 58 y/o and have worked in the healthcare industry for 26+ years.

And I'm sure the good doctor HAS been done over by the insurance companies. Face it, he runs a business. He has to account for time and money like others.

There is no issue with the staff at the office . They are all extreemly helpful and polite . Matey does not control the insurance companies, so what they cover and do not cover is not his issue . What is his issue is his rude , bullying obnoxious way .Doctors are not always right although they think they are . He has absolutely no personality to deal with patients . I have dealt with many doctors over the years and have friends who are doctors , he is unlike any I know . I wouldnt take my pet dog to see him . They say do not eat in an empty resturant . There is a reason his office has always been empty each time we went ,and his health grades are all less than average after 16 reviews . If you want to see the best Podiatrist in North Florida check out Dr Beth Pierce, I can assure you they are world apart.
