I have been in law enforcement for over 12 years and have never seen anything that you describe. Are there dishonest officer? Of course, they are of the human race. I have seen officers written up, lost their car, lost pay, and even fired. In most cases these punishments were justified.
I agree with the video/mic setup, because it has been proven to clear officers from bogus complaints. It also aids in prosecution. A company has created the VidMic and it looks great. Feel free to buy me one, I will wear it proudly.
What do you do for a living now?
I invest in real estate. I commend you if you are truly as virtuous as you claim to be. If you believe that you daily treat everyone with respect and do your job then you are to be revered. I wont judge you personally for my bad experience. I wont however turn a blind eye to what I know to be true. Be safe out there.

He's got one of the safest jobs out there if you look at all the job related death's and injuries. And he's over paid and under trained as well, that why there are so many others being killed and injured instead. Thay can't even inforce traffic laws thease days.

The job is what you make it. If all you want to do is answer calls then thats all it is. I actually had a pretty good average for making arrests on calls because I always checked everybody for warrants. I have never observed an corruption or racism with any of the officers that I have worked with. It has been my observation that people commonly do inappropriate and improper things around those they feel will not say or do anything and engage in those actions themselves. If you witnessed improper or criminal actions you had a duty to report them. Thankfully, I have never had a fellow officer do anything wrong in my presence but if they did, I would go after them. Its your personal integrity at stake. If you see something wrong and do nothing to fix it then you are just as guilty. I hear a lot of bitterness in your posts and something tells me that we are not getting the full story, but thats your right.

Ultimately it breaks down to your own personal integrity and what you make this job to be. If you ride around from call to call all day then you will probably never make a real difference. If you get out of the car, walk the neighborhoods, apartment complexes, and engage with the community where you ride, you will be amazed at what you can do. There is nothing that I love better than sneaking up behind someone who just conducted a hand to hand and grabbing them before they knew I was there.

As far as video and audio recording I would absolutely love it. As you can imagine the criminals where I ride hate my guts. I have been falsely accused of stuff before. My favorite was conducting a search without the property owner's consent. I got a big kick out of it when I showed my SGT. the consent to search form the person signed and my SGT. was able to call them the liar they were. If you want to donate some equipment I know a lot of us that would take you up on it.

To bad the rest of the folks that deal with the public on a day to don't have the tools to deal that with.

We all stick our heads out into the valley of the shadow of death everyday, so what makes you so special?

If you want more equipment and help, take a pay cut to do what you have to do, like many other people have to do thease days. Or are you above that?

Why don't you take a pay cut! No one really cares that you repair print machines. Woohoo, you contribute to killing of the environment and help spread propaganda.

You come on here and never have anything positive to say. You must be real fun to hang out with.

You might check your research, and make sure your post match it. It does not matter how many casino's they have if employment is low, that means unemployment is high. Oh no! I have a few Pawn shops in my area. There goes the hood. LOL! Those evil Pawn shops.

Exactly. Pawn shops have been in jacksonville for as long as I can remember. They're hardly the source of social decline. And Retired, dont stifle the progress that the rest of us would like to see. If the woman you marry turns into someone you dont like, divorce her. Thus, if the place you live does the same thing, move.

My take on the cops is that they over all do a decent job. There are however some that should not have made it past the initial interview. One such is someone who a lot of you may recognize. He is a motorcycle cop that I myself have heard stories about after have met him. He has a bad habit of talking down to people. He has this I am better and smarted attitude. I was not being given a ticket by him I was discussing a traffic issue in my neighborhood with him. If we can rid our force of cops like him and of course the ones who are down right corrupt I would say that more pay could be afforded. I also wonder if maybe some of the brass lake leadership skills. They may be the best cops on the force but that does not mean they are good leaders.

Blessings

What pawn shops? I haven't seen any around the casinos and I was just there three weeks ago. What you say does not make sense, if employment is low, unemployment is high? There are having a hard time finding employees there. Guess you went before Katrina.

I disagree. We already have the crime, and I don't think it will make any difference with your other points. We have the dog tracks and the lottery as it is. Gambling is gambling. I don't believe that half laws do us any good.
Thank you for your support. Go to the City of Biloxi website and read the State of the City. Then you will see what the casino industry has done for Mississippi. I go there almost every other month, and I have yet to see anyone arrested, no prostitutes running the streets, never seen anyone pulled over on Hwy 90 in front of these casinos, no pawn shops any where near the casinos, and see the people having fun.

This is not true. If they tend to stay in busines, then need need your services. Therefore, they are forced to pay for you! I work for the money I earn. I don't expect any free rides. I got my education, I applied for the job, I come to work everyday, I put my life on the line, I chase bad guys, I investigate criminal behavior, and I put people in jail.

How is this a free ride? I earn what the city pays me. Just as you earn what your customers pay. The difference is, you can charge what you want, I have to settle with what the city is willing or able to pay.

It is true.

The people that I deal with have no legal binding to do business with me at all. Most of the problems that I have to deal with are with paper feed and delivery timing, roller settings, and plate to blanket to impression cylinder settings.. Its very seldom I have to replace a part because many parts I can repair myself. A service tech from the manufacture would only replace the part because they don't repair them and will charge you an arm and a leg for it, they don't give you a choice which is just like your job, you dictate the terms, we have no other choice but to pay to price.

The State sets the standards for firearms qualifications. JSO meets those standards, which are not that high. JSO also has in the past enhanced the reqirements for qualification. I can honestly say that each time I went to the range I qualified. It should also be noted that in the last year or 2, they have started taking the officers guns and cars away from them if they could not qualify.
Yes we could use more range time, but with the way budget cuts are being proposed, I do not believe that the department will have the recources. This means if the officer wants extra firearms training he will have to pay for it himself.
you dumass, PAY FOR IT YOURSELF, I DO.. we do not rely on police for personal security, you are a buffoon if you believe any different , budget cuts?? start with refining department sizes, and FIRING people that do not do their work correctly, and what is this WE? you are retired , remember.. if you cannot afford 15.00 bucks and purchase some ammo, your problems are bigger than blaming the mayor , and sheriff, jackass..

I believe you misread his post. He was defending the training program. He also stated that if officers wanted additional training, they were responsible for the costs. He was not blaming anyone, he mearly made a statement, that additional training was unavailable due to budget cuts. He is a retired police officer and was speaking from experience.

I think most police officers would welcome dash cams and microphone devices. It would eliminate 95% of the frivolous lawsuits, bogus settlements, complaints of excessive force and rudeness against the officers. It would allow officers to build stronger cases against the thugs and result in more prosecution and criminals off the street. The money saved would fund many new hires and enable the internal affairs and integrity units to operate at a fraction of their present budget. Bring on the cameras and mics and give the police a raise with the money generated. There would be plenty of defense lawyers unable to find clients, but I'm sure they'd be willing to take one for the team in the spirit of truth and justice.

As a retired officer, I am still required to qualify at the range 2 times a year for the privilage of carrying my concealed weapon. This requirement was placed on us by the government, so that I can carry my weapon in others states, as well as Florida. If I feel I need additional training I will get it. I also have a Florida CWP. I have 2 glock 40's, several 38's and plenty of ammo to spare. As for personnel security, I do not expect anyone to look after me that is why I do not go anywhere without my gun. Have fun out there and please be careful.
