I was the Major dismissed from Hendry Correctional Institution. Most of your story is based on lies. Colonel Avant did not invite anyone to his house. The staff showed there respects to there Supervisor and friend. Mr. McDonough is on a power trip. Several people were dismissed for supporting the Colonel. We were advised that we were not leaders by supporting someone that he has fired. I served near 18 years with the department of Corrections. and I was dismissed for going by the Colonel's house, which is approximately 7 yards from my front door to his front door. There were no evidence of anyone making threatening phone calls to sergeant Sooy. Someone started the rumor that it had came from the Colonel's house. There were never any officers in the parking lot at 12:00 am threatening staff, as was told. The Police were in the parking lot at that time. I am sure if there would have been some arrest that night if that had happened while they were there. There were also discrimination towards Officers. There were certain Officers that had went by the Colonel's house that were not fired, and they were there longer than most people. So it seems that the Department is choosing there friends. Mr. McDonough promotes Sergeant Sooy to Major, skipping two ranks. It was reported by a Nurse that Sergeant Sooy had previously hit an inmate during a post use of force examination, but this was covered up, because the department did not want to look bad, after they had just promoted him to Major. The Secretary violated the promotion policy and procedures. The 4 Officers that were fired for the allegations of inmate abuse, were fired the day after the allegations, not 2 days. The 4 Officers were never given an opportunity to make a statement, before they were fired. The decisions on this whole incident were made quickly and were made based on lies.

A lot has happened at Hendry C.I in the last month. I just find it funny that this is what makes it to the media, and brings out the big wigs of DOC to the institution. For those of you who have never worked for in a prison before let me tell you it is not an easy enviorment to work in. This incedent is an ufoturnet event. Here is something you might not know since it seems only negative things about Hendry make the news. These same officers who were fired were working at Hendry when hurricane Wilma came and destroyed a good 60% of the institutions. They worked countless hours working to secure and rebuild this intitution. Not because they were rewarded but because they loved what they did. Major Sullivan than Captain Stayed mulitple days for 20 hour shifts to insure the proper safety of the inmates and officers. Nobody wants to talk about the good that these and many other officers have done. Only the bad. It is a shame Hendry lost so really good officers.

My husband is also an inmate at Hendry and he was beat up the first day he arrived there because the guard said he lacked manners. He forgot to say yes sir to one of the questions. This is one of the guards that were fired for abuse. My husband did not report the incident to anyone because he feared for his life. I am glad this has been exposed at this prison but unfortunately it is very common in all the prisons. Hats off to the brave guard who reported the abuse. and hats off to McDonnough that took action and did something about it.

I was a former co at Hendry CI. I was currently employeed during the so called change at HendryCI. The people that they have brought in are selfish, unprofessional, and racist towards minority. i was dismissal simply because i reported to the colonel that i was verbal abused by Capt. Morris during a meeting that was held with no reasons or actions to follow. Capt. was involved in a use of force on an inmate just because the inmate ask him a question out loud. He applied excessive force to the inmate and it was covered up, it not fair that these people with white shirts try to take advantage of their own staff and abuse inmates and gets away with it, i just think some people desevre a chance on something so minor as missing days from work or reporting abuse on staff or inmates Hendry is not changing its getting worst

In regards to the officer being verbally abused by Captain Morris. If the captain verbally abused you write an incident report. A captain is never to lose his head or composure while couseling an officer. It's unethical, and it's ashamed that a lot of correctional officers don't take advantage of those incident reports.

I would like to express my appreciation for the people that were fired from Hendry Correctional if they were crooked, I know alot about Hendry, I worked there for five years and saw the corruption first hand. I witnessed several inmates being wet with toilet water, inmates being handcuffed for reasons not covered in the regulations, and inmate property being destroyed for saying they were not the ones that threw paper in the middle of the dorm floor.

I am a former Sergeant at Hendry C.I. and allthough in no way do I condone the illegal activity or serious allegations that took place under the tenure of Col. W. Avent. However, I do believe that many of the accusations that were printed in the press were false. As an officer it is our duty to report any accusation of abuse commited by another inmate or staff person. Along with the 4 Sergeants that were dismissed and brought up on charges, there were a number of dedicated individuals that got pulled into this storm and lost their careers from it. Major Sullivan and LT. Morgan were commended many times over for their dedicated service and I WAS PROUD to serve as a Correctional Officer under their supervision. Once they were wrongly dismissed the decision was made to then immediately get rid of every Shift OIC, without warning or explanation to staff the higher ups decided to remove the only sense of comfort and stability we had. Over the past 6 months the administration at Hendry has made it a VERY dangerous place to work due to making a large percentage of their certified, experienced officers either forcibly resign out of fear of loosing their careers, or terminating them for no apparent reason. The recent arrests of 2 newly hired officers for attempting to bring drugs onto the compound is a prime example of the character of individuals that are being hired to replace trust worthy officers who were simply run off due to personality conflicts. I was lucky to excape Hendry without loosing my career, others were not so lucky.

Major Sullivan I want to thank you for everything i learged under your supervision. It was a shame that the certain individuals saw fit to discard you evnthough they watched your career blossom and saw you promote very quickly through the system due to your tireless dedication. Had it not been for the work you did leading up to the last audit Hendry would not have passed with flying colors as it did. I would be proud to go into battle with a leader like yourself and hope that in time you will be vindicated and get another opportunity to show the reason why you made it to the rank of Major in such a short time...

Shame on you for not having the courage to do your job and report alleged abuse that took place in your presence. Your just as guilty as the officers commiting the acts that you alleged took place.

Nancy I am sorry to hear about the situation that your husband is in. If he is currently an inmate at Washington he needs to speak to the prison inspector. If his claims have any bit of truth behind them I am sure that the inspectors especially with everything that happened in recent months will take every step necessary to protect him most likely placing him in confinement which is constantly monitored, They will also take precautionary measures and have him transferred immediately pending a thorough investigation. Inmates tend to blow things out of proportions from time to time especially because they know that their family members and loved ones tend to be vernerable due to the emotional stress involved with missing their loved one. I am not saying that this is whats happening I just want you to know that inmates know what steps they have to take in order to report any incident and that if reported it will be thoroughly investigated. If you are still not convinced contact FDLE.

The only ATROCOTIES I've seen FIRST HAND is the things that some of these poor, poor inmates done to their victims when I read the details of their crimes in their file folders. I ONCE HEARD AN INMATE STATE THAT HE COULD NOT BELIEVE HE GOT LIFE.IT AN'T LIKE I KILLED SOMEBODY. WHEN HE WAS LEAVING THE COURT ROOM. HE WAS RIGHT HE DID'NT KILL ANYBODY HE SHOT HIS VICTIM SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN ROBBED HIM LEAVING THIS MAN HAVING TO WALK WITH A CAIN THE REST OF HIS LIFE,THE VICTIM WAS ONLY 24. I SAY THIS GUY NEEDS A BEATING ATLEAST TWICE A DAY.SO TO YOU PEOPLE THAT HAVE LOVED ONES IN PRISON FOR HURTING PEOPLE OR TERRIZING THEM DURING THEIR CRIME IF THIS IS YOUR CASE JUST SHUT ABOUT YOU CAQN LOVE THEM JUST THE SAME WHEN THEY GET OUT.

Very well said. i am a former correctional officer. It always amazed me that friends and family of inmates want to bitch and complain about how their "loved one" is treated in prison. But do they ever stop to think what they put their victims thru?? I would never condone the abuse of anyone, but lets get real for a minute. These people are not in prison for singing too loud in the church choir!! It's real simple--if you dont like the way your are treated in prison DON'T COMMIT ANY CRIMES THAT COULD LAND YOU THERE. YOU ARE THERE BECAUSE YOU COULD NOT, OR WOULD NOT, FUNCTION LAWFULLY IN SOCIETY. So, all you boo-hooer's can just go pound sand!! Or, you get a job at a prison and see what actually goes on. there's an old saying among prison officially that as always prove true to me "You can tell an inmate is lying just by watching him open his mouth to speak!!"
