Girl’s High School Basketball Coach Shoots Attackers in Parking Lot.

Officials say a girl’s basketball coach from Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School in Detroit shot two teens who attacked him as he was walking two basketball players to their cars in the school parking lot.

According to police, the 70 year old basketball coach was walking the girls to their car when he was approached by the attackers. When one of the attackers grabbed the coach by his necklace, he pulled out his gun and shot them both.

One of the alleged attackers was found dead on the street, while another was taken to the hospital. Both of the attackers had attended the high school, and one had been expelled from the school.

Police say that the coach had a concealed weapons permit and is cooperating with police.

The Detroit Public Schools issued this statement to 7 Action News:

At approximately 7:30pm DPS Police responded to a call of attempted robbery at Martin Luther King Jr. High School. DPS Police are cooperating with DPD which is handling the lead investigation.

We are very relieved that all students and DPS personnel and representatives involved are safe and were unharmed. Preliminary reports are that shots were fired during an attempted robbery of a member of the coaching team of the school’s girls basketball program by two assailants outside the school. There was one fatality and one injured suspect in serious condition.

The school has many security features which were in place at the time of the incident as well as a full security plan as do all DPS schools. These will be reviewed as the regularly are after any incidents. There will be counselors available at the school Monday morning for students and faculty members.

The Detroit police have expressed several times that they are understaffed and unable to meet the needs of the city.

I don't trust teachers with this responsibility. A lot of them can't keep their pants zipped up around little kids! How many reports of teachers (male and female) molesting their students have you heard lately?!

but you trust a police officer. there have been more than a few that sell drugs or play with little girls. So who would you trust to protect our children. Teach your kids what people are allowed to do to them

this teacher is a gentleman. He pulled out his pistol and not his gun. some teachers can be trusted, some can't. some police can be trusted, some can't. for a man to have children one must have the ability to size someone up real quick to know who to trust and who is not trustworthy. i would rather have this gentleman teacher with my girls than some police officers. JA? JA

teachers are entrusted with the care of kids only. cops aren't. this isn't about cops, though. it's about teachers having access to firearms around children.

Teachers today have no business teaching period and you favor giving them guns? I would never trust some union thug socialist communist with a gun around kids.

Great coach. He made an example to all would be thugs not to attack students or the staff at Detroit schools. Traditionally schools are gun free zones. Of which to an attacker this means defenseless victims. Criminals do not care about our laws. The coach will get in trouble if he can't prove his life or his students or him was in danger. It's better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.
