Ok racists, you have make you voice heard on this topic more than enough; so I'm begging you, just this once- save your redneck rhetoric. I am looking for the LEGIT reasons why black people don't tip. Is it some form of payback? If you come in, and I treat you like ROYALTY, why do you leave me nothing? I would love to hear from (real) black people... it's anonymous, so why not? Help me understand.

Them spooks don't tip so they have more money for a 40oz colt 45 or a big ole bottle of cheap wine. They were refused service years ago because they would not tip,and you thought it was because they were ape like.My fellow Americans i am not a racist!!!!

If you look it why do you tip? More than likely you saw your parents tip. Blacks have not been eating out that long(at nice places) they do not know to tip. The people that I know that do not tip say the employer should pay the waiter not them. In the past the Blacks were in the back cooking while the white waiter was out front geting tips. If you think about it and are old enough. How may Blacks did you see when you were on vacation when you were a kid. Now you see them. In the past if they took a trip they stayed with kinfolks. I will say one thing they do like family reunions and going out in groups.

I am black and I always tip... I do have friends that dont like to tip and I avoid goin out to eat with them... There really isn't a reason some just don't like to tip just like some whites don't like to tip....

It's cultural not skin color. When I waited tables black groups , white trash couples and after church crowd were terrible . The first two were the rudest the church crowd was just cheap . I honestly would see black people tip their own people over a white one ... But I'm sure white people have done the same.. I remember being young and offended because I would give great service and 7 out 10 of black people acted hateful, loud and rude to me . Complained about the food and wanted meals comped.

They are used to getting all their food for free so the concept of paying cash in relation to eating food is foreign to them.

Why should we tip? All they do is bring your food.

I agree it is cultural not skin color. Curious0780 why do you tip. I agree some whites do not tip. The ones I have been with, I ask why they do not.
They do not see the need for it. If you look at it the waiter expects a tip. The Hair dresser expects a tip. There are tip jars at places that just take your order and do not bring your food. It is kind of like buying a car. The sticker price is not what you pay. Why do we have a tip system? That is a different subject. I think you should tip a waiter. I do at about 20 t0 25% because they are not payed crap. I have a friend who was a waiter and I was amazed at what he told me he made a year in tips. I was amazed at what people who beg at the side of the road (per the news)can make in a year. There is a reason why people do not tip. I do not think most will say why, because they do not know themself. Very few people ask why they do something or why they do not do something. They do not care and think only of their self.

i am white. I tip. But when you think about it, why don't the restaurants just pay their wait staff? If I go to Outback and spend $80 bucks, why should I be obligated to "gift" another $20 to the server? In Australia servers get wages and tipping isn't customary. I know these restaurants are making enough money to pay their help a decent wage.

I should note that I'm not a server. I know that being a server is tough. My job is very physically demanding, though. So in my case, it's not a matter of "just bringing food" as someone said.

If we got rid of the tipping system, restaurants would have to increase their menu prices *substantially* in order pay the waitstaff. As a former server, I agree that certain types of folks are less apt to tip well or tip at all. It IS disappointing when you treat a customer like royalty and you don't get paid for it.

However, I do think the tipping system helps customers receive better service. Think about it... non-tipped workers in the service industry rarely go above and beyond to serve you. Just imagine the service you get from some rude workers at Walmart or McDonalds, just to name a couple of examples.

Just a message for those who don't tip because you're too cheap or you don't believe in tipping:
1. You are not punishing the management by forcing your non-tipping belief on the server. It only hurts the server. You knew when you entered the place that you are expected to tip for good service. You should include this in your budget for eating out. If it's not in your budget, eat somewhere you don't have to tip, or cook meals at home.
2. Do you have certain restaurants you like to frequent? Beware, because those servers remember you and your non-tipping ways. You may be paying for it without knowing :):)

I agree with Jane. Like it or not This is the system we have. The servers I tip well seem to remember me. It makes sense to tip, if you want good food and service. I do not dress well and I somtimes feel I get bad service because of that.
The only way to change that is to give a good tip.
If you are Black you may want to try that. I try to be kind to servers and treat people as I would like to be treated. They work hard for the money.
One other thing I will bring up. When I as young 10% was a good tip then 15% now 20 to 25%. The guy I know that was a server took a cut in pay to work where I do, but he did it for the long term.

Although it is not a law that one has to tip, I tip based on the service I receive. If you are nice, courteous, and stay on top of it, then yes I will tip. But if the service is not great or you're rude, then the tip went out of the window with the attitude.

I think we established from the start that in the situation(s) being discussed, service and attitude is/was outstanding.
