My son goes to Calvary Baptist Church and he told me that Opie was fired by the new pastor, Grant Gains.

Opie has really helped my boy. I have to travel a lot for my job and I hate to see this bulls---.

Who is this new pastor? I heard he was younger than Opie. WTF happened?

He is the son of Steve Gaines, the pastor at Bellevue in Memphis. His daddy is well known for controversy after he allowed a child molster to stay on staff over six months after he was told about it. Only after he was confronted about it by the victim who told him he was going public with it did he let him go.......

Opie has ALWAYS been committed to the children and youth at Calvary Baptist. I can honestly say I am ashamed to be a member of Calvary. You will not find a better youth minister anywhere. His wife Lydia has also been equally committed to the youth dept since they have been married. We were given some stupid unfounded reason for this action. Which also proves Pastor Grant does not have a clue about what goes on in the youth dept at Calvary, which now is nothing! From what I understand the personnel committee really had no "vote". It was already decided when they met. It's a very sad situation for the children, youth and parents of Calvary Baptist Church.

We were told he was looking for an associate pastor position and Grant did not feel he could give 100% to the youth while looking. So he "offered" to accept a letter of resignation. Grant stated he had been looking for 6-8 months. My position is so even if he's been loooking, that is not uncommon in the ministry. Grant "was looking" when he came to Calvary. Had Opie been called to another position he would have given whatever notice is required and been able to explain to the children and youth he was leaving Calvary which would have been better for them than the way they were blind sided. To them Opie was just gone. He was not given the opportunity to speak to them. In my opinion this decision was made without any consideration of the children or youth, or Opie's dedication to Calvary Baptist Church and the children/youth ministry.

Church problems should be talked about with the church family, not everyone on topix. If you are a member, then take it up with the church staff, dont gossip about it on here!!

Not a problem now, Opie's gone. Not gossip when facts are stated. Simply responding to a question of what happened. If you don't like the thread, don't read it.

I'm also the daughter of a pastor and I got pregnant before I got married also, does that make me or her a bad person? The Bible says "Let he that has no sin cast the first stone". Gossip is a sin. Why is it necessary to hurt this family with gossip? She is married to the babies father, as if that's any of your business and they are very happy!

It seems that for the last 35 years + or -, pastors have become administrators running everything in the church. They appear to have forgotten what a pastor does. A real pastor visits the sick, elderly, those hurting for whatever reason, unchurched of the community, etc. These days they seem to go to conferences bringing back very little that would help their congregation. Conferences have turned into mini-vacations paid for by the church. Deacons, you have similiar duties also.(1 Tim. 3:1-13)

Think on these things!

Loved the part about the misdirection half truth on how the preschool closing was in no way related to the thousands if cash that was stolen.

Calvary members. Did you ever see any if that money back?

Wait you got a new bus? And a building campaign?

I can see how you're kept quiet then.
