max had alot of friends and i can say that i was proud to be one of them...he lived in the same mobile home park as i did and he loved the attention from the kids because he could tell all his stories...as i got older and could drive,i would drive max around to different place in arnold mo. in his truck that he had...i basically had to sit with seat all the way back in an extended cab and put cushions behind me so i could touch the pedals..max did have bad knees so often times i would help him in and out the truck or up the steps at his home....i dont remember the year but the tv show real people came and interviewed me and other kids about max..fred willard and sarah purcell were there but i dont think i ever saw it on tv....i really miss max and unfortunately i was not aware when he got sick and passed away and i was told that he wondered why i had not come to see him while he was sick because i had always kept in touch...i also would like to talk to betty, shane or amy....i still live in the arnold area and listed in the phone book

Max Palmer was my 3rd cousin. My grandmother (Hazel McCord), his 1st cousin, remembers Max riding a horse down to her house when she was about 10 years old and his legs were dragging the ground. I've been looking for information on him and pictures. Thank you all for the stories of a cousin I never had the chance to know.
Carla, I'm Max's son Shane. I would be very interested in anything you might know or would be able to find about my Dad. I'm trying to get a book together on his life and need any and all info I can get. Thanks Shane

When I was about 9 or ten years old, Max lived with us in Dinsmore Florida, just North of Jacksonville, Fl. My mom and Dad had a night club, and he was the bouncer by name, but he turned out to be more of an attraction for the club, and rarely bounced anyone. He was a true gentle giant, and use to put me, and my two brothers, and my sister on his back all at the same time. He taught me how to fish, in a little creek just down the road from the club. We did not have a bed large enough for him, so my dad put an ottoman at the end. I think he wore a size 20 shoe at the time. One time my dad was having trouble with a man and his wife, and told them to leave the club, and he would take the man to the car, and go back and get the wife, and while getting the wife, the man would come back in to the club. After several attempts, my dad told Max that he needed to help, after all he was the bouncer, supposedly. Then my dad put the man in the car, and told Max to not let him get out. When my dad went to get the wife and escort her out, the man began to open the door of the car again. That is when Max said, " I do not want to hit you George, but if I do, it will feel like a bolt of lighting struck you, so please do not open the door" Well that is all it took, the man said " OK Max ", and closed the door back. Then a little while later, my mom found Max sitting at the bar crying, and asked him what was wrong. He said that Roy, my Dad "did not love him anymore". That was the biggest proof of his gentleness, my Dad had never raised his voice to him before that night, and surely never did again. It hurt us all to see him cry. Us kids really loved Max, and he was a true mentor, and friend to us all. I am sorry I lost contact with him, and wish I could have seen him just one more time.

I met Max at our church in 1971 when he came to preach. The night before he preached, our youth group had him to speak to us at a banquet. Because I was the shortest one in our group, they photographed us together. He was holding my guitar. I will be glad to share that photo via email if anyone is interested.
I am interested in all stories and photos on Max Palmer. I'm in the process of writing a feature story about Max. I'm originally from Crowder and remember meeting Max. He would drive up and watch our little league baseball games in a Ford Mustang. He sat on the back seat to drive. He never got out, it was just too much of a hassle. I also remember him attending Crowder Baptist Church but I never heard him preach.

I am a full time Baptist Pastor in Goodman, MS but I have started a small seasoning company with the Mississippi Delta as a theme. You cannot highlight the interesting and unique characters and pass Max by. He was first on my list but I've learned so much about him it has gone from a few paragraphs to something more.

I am interested in all the stories and photos that I can get my hands on. I assure you he will be treated with the greatest respect.

I have a photo album up now that I have collected and shared, with permission of course.

would like to share with you what I have. My effort is nothing like a book, just paying tribute to one of the great products of the Mississippi Delta Cotton fields. I am from Crowder and can put you in contact with a lot of those people.

A quick contribution for you. If Bobbie Jean is Bobbie Phillips, the daughter of John and Kathleen Phillips, she may still live in a little house just outside of Crowder (according to my sources).
