Does anyone know if there's any type of support for kids who are cutting and harming themselves in Jackson? I've searched and can't find any meeting support groups or anything. This seems to be a real issue here. Thanks in advance for any constructive comments.

I noticed (last year) a young girl on my daughters cheer squad, she had cuts all over her arms. Seeing that broke my heart for the young lady. I don't really understand what makes a person do this. I guess, different reasons for all kids. Seeing this made me feel like she was in so much internal pain. Good Luck and I hope and pray your child is ok and gets help.

You want to know why people cut? Because it's a distraction. For one moment you don't feel the pain, the loss, the hurt. All you feel is that razor going into your skin, the blood dripping down your arm, leg, stomach. You don't think about how alone you are or how fat and ugly you think you are. You don't think about the way people talk about you behind your back. You don't think about how your family is fighting or how your friends hate you. All you think about is the blood.
And did you know it gets addicting? Well that's because when the hurt and pain comes back, when the cut isn't fresh and you can feel all the build up of sadness and loneliness inside you. So you have to do it again, but a little deeper so the numbness will last longer. The pain inside will be delayed longer. An as the pain gets worse and worse you have to make the pain outside worse and worse. It's all about control. You have it. You can't control the pain on the inside so you get to control it on the outside.

It breaks my heart that intelligent, thoughtful young adults feel that they have no choice but to hurt themselves.

What's even more sad is it's not just teens. I've met people who started at five..six years old. I've met adults..50years old who are still self harming. Some that are just now starting. It's horrible. It's so sad.

You are right. Do you have any ideas how to help? You seem very knowledgeable about this. My daughter is doing better but I'm always worried that she will regress.

I know a lot about it because I'm 15 years old and I cut for two years. My parents knew but didn't do anything about it like you are and I think you're a wonderful Mom for that.
I don't know if you have yet or not but take away anything she could hurt herself with. That's almost anything like..scissors, razors if you want, CD's if it's that bad. Just anything.
Try setting something up with her school councilor. She'll hate it, but I'm sure it'll help.
If she refuses, then you try and be her councilor. Just talk to her everyday. This is where you'd need to act more as a best friend than a parent because most teens don't like telling their parents all their life problems.
Just make sure she knows you're always there and that whatever the reason for her self harm, it's not worth what she's doing to herself.
You and her family loves her, her friends, and strangers like me, all love her. When she realizes that, things get easier.

I must be weird, because I'd rather be super depressed than cut my arms.

Their is a hospital that helped me called Center Point it's close to St. Louis. I was sent their from Saint Francis, my mom and dad didn't know what to do and it was consuming my life. I would even cut in class at school. They took me to St Francis er and told them what was going on and they sent me to Center Point. I was their for a short time but it helped.

Clearly this is something that more religion and less Obama would fix.
