Lower back/ruptured discs/sciatica surgery... Best/worst area back surgeons?

I'm in the process of jumping through all the necessary medical hoops (appointments, tests, etc) leading to lower back surgery in relation to ruptured discs and sciatica - and this includes getting a second opinion.
I'm not originally from this area/state so I don't many word-of-mouth resources to rely on in this field. My initial referral is with Dr Joel Gray/Cape Neuro Assoc and I'm leaning towards Dr Scott Gibbs/Brain & Neuro Spine Clinic for a second opinion.
I was just wondering if you all might share your experiences with me regarding the area surgeons in this field, and your surgery type, good or bad. I'm nervous about making a regrettable decision and suffering lifelong repercussions because of ignorance on my part.
Many thanks!

It's a catch 22...surgery in Cape or St. Louis.
If you have surgery done in St. Louis and have difficulty after you return home to Cape what then?
You probably could not withstand the long trip to St. Louis. On the other hand, you're taking a chance here in Cape.
I would read and evaluate all the posts on this thread. Also, talk to anyone/everyone..friends, family, acquaintances, neighbors, even strangers.
Each of us has a spine different from another. What happened (good or bad) to one person may not happen with you.
For peace of mind make an appointment with the Dr./Dr's you are considering. It's called an interview visit. Get to know him, have him answer your questions and concerns, also inquire about therapy after the surgery. Be sure to write down your questions before your visit.
Then continue your quest to find the pros and cons of using a particular Dr.
Hope this helps.

Guest is correct, it's a catch 22 but I personally would take that risk when it comes to the spinal area. Rehab can be done here after with medical orders from your doctor. Trueblood is a good surgeon here in cape but last I heard he weaning off patients to retire. But its worth a visit for a consult. There is a young doctor taking his place. Very attentive but not much experience yet.

I think Trueblood has already retired, however, his son is now there. Some Dr.'s specialize in knees and some in the back. Call and see who does what. Then interview each one.
For a second opinion, I would definitely go to St. Louis. I heard Barnes is a good hospital if you decide to have surgery in St. Louis.
Do not go to a "teaching" hospital! You want a doctor with much experience, not a student.

"Too young", may I ask for more details? What did Fonn do, or was it a case of 'not do'?

Today I was told Dr. Gibbs and Dr. Tolinteno have good reputations regarding back surgery.

Brain surgery. He cut me from ear to ear and my follow up care was awful... Now I'm disabled and would not refer anyone to him.

If you have to have surgery, get it in St. Louis. Do you know any attorneys? Some of them have extensive collections of data on Cape surgeons, like how many times they have been sued for malpractice and how many times they have settled out of court or gone to court. A few doctors here in Cape have been sued many, many times. Surgery is a last resort, not a first resort. That is the most important thing to remember.

Dr Gibbs likes to operate...he's good though.
Dr Vaught good
Dr Tolintino good (Harvard Grad)
Dr YingLing good
Dr Fonn Bad

Nursing in Cape better than St. Louis. Less patients per nurse. Rehab in Cape great. No guarantee that care is better in St. Louis unless you find someone who can give u equal advice. Call the neuro floor of a hospital, speak to a
Nurse. They know.

Just because they are in St. Louis doesnt mean they are an awesome surgeon. I had a discetomy from Dr. Colle here in Cape and the nerosurgeons practice at Southeast. I am very pleased with the results. Woke up from surgery with NO PAIN!

I heard Parks left because St. Louis doctors were tired of cleaning up his bad surgeries. A number of St. Louis doctors were trying to get his license pulled if he kept doing certain procedures.
