Children of African Immigrants: America's Best Kept Secret

Africans have the highest educational attainment rates of any immigrant group in the United States with higher levels of completion than the stereotyped Asian American model minority. It is not only the first generation that does well, as estimates indicate that a highly disproportionate percentage of black students at elite universities are African or the children of African immigrants.

In an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Journal of Blacks in higher education, African immigrants to the United States were found more likely to be college educated than any other immigrant group. African immigrants to the U.S. are also more highly educated than any other native-born ethnic group including white Americans. Some 48.9 percent of all African immigrants hold a college diploma. This is slightly more than the percentage of Asian immigrants to the U.S., nearly double the rate of native-born white Americans, and nearly four times the rate of native-born African Americans.



In 1997, 19.4 percent of all adult African immigrants in the United States held a graduate degree, compared to 8.1 percent of adult whites and 3.8 percent of adult blacks in the United States, respectively. This information suggests that America has an equally large achievement gap between whites and African/Asian immigrants as it does between white and black Americans.



Of the African-born population in the United States age 25 and older, 86.4% reported having a high school degree or higher, compared with 78. 9% of Asian born immigrants and 76.5% of European born immigrants, respectively. These figures contrast with 61.8% percent of the total foreign-born population.

Yet their talents, and achievements, consistently go unnoticed and kept hidden in the confines of racial stigmas.

Thus biology has no correlation and holds no leverage in one's ability to fulfill their intellectual potential. I am a second generation Nigerian-American, and I personally believe this is due to how much value Nigerians place on education. I also believe that the very strict,authoritarian parenting styles that the majority of African parents practice also plays an integral role in the academic performances of their children. I find this to be particularly interesting, because many people including sociologists, as well has theorists speak heavily against this type of parenting styles.

1. The numbers cited above include mostly Indo-Pak "Africans" living in various countries, plus some Jews from South Africa who now think that apartheid wasn't so bad after all.

You know hey say when you ASSume you make and ass out of you and me. If you checked the link that I posted, or took the personal initiative to check the census bureau website, you would have learned that most of those numbers apply to West Africans, the numbers apply the least to the countries you stated, because there the population of immigrants from Northern African countries and South African countries are minescule in comparison to the immigrants from West African countries. The data specifically shows that immigrants from countries such as Kenya (the only North African country), Nigeria (Especially; they apparently make up the majority of the population of Africans in certain areas), and I believe Ghana all mainly black countries mind you are the ones who contribute heavily to those statistics. And This thread is for mature adults only, if you can't have a discussion without being an embarrassment to your races, whatever it my be ( I'm assuming you two are white though) via your ignorance, there are other threads specifically made for people like you to share your thoughts and bask in your infantile humor together.

Why don't you first explain to me how your question is in any way relevant to the topic at hand or any of the aforementioned questions above for instance, thoughts about authoritarian parenting styles? or why don't you tell about the last time you've ever been to a West African country to know what they smell like..?? For your information many of these African students come here from their countries to study and then return to their countries and use their education to improve their countries. lol ohamina your punchlines are hilarious! But I agree with you, I just recently graduated from NYU, and and it was actually one of the first things I noticed about the black students who attended. They were usually African, I had a few African TA's as well, one in particular because she was very sweet and helpful,even more so then my professor I struggled throughout the class and because of her I was able to get through the class. She was very tall and gorgeous as well, so I looked forward to the office hours despite the horrible course (biochemistry), and she had a cool subtle accent, She was also Nigerian!! which is what drew to me comment. The African immigrants behave completely different then African americans I also noticed. I was guilty of prejudism towards blacks until I went to collage and became exposed to other cultures. They do hold a lot of value to their education, and I wouldn't be surprised if autoritarian parenting styles played a major role. I think it's just a foreign thing in general. My parents are Russian immigrants and they raised me the same way. My father was very hard on me which was tough growing up but I now understand why. I can't believe this information is so hidden in the dark though, the only thing they like to expose about blacks are the negatives like HIV rates etc, it just shows a great sense of jealousy,intimidation, and insecurity on the behalf of white americans.

I've seen plenty of African born scholars & professionals here. The problem [I think] you're having is getting lumped in w/what's called "African-Americans" who were born here. some of them have their own culture & are un-American. Maybe you can teach them to be Americans & lose the hyphen.

What is the issue that whites have with the hyphen? I've noticed that whites complain about that often, and have always been curious as to why. Maybe while you answer that question you too can try to focus on the topic at hand.
