Time to start thinking about the 2013 Mets roster. An infield of Wright, Tejada, Murphy, Davis and Buck does not inspire dreams of the post season, but at least it consists of actual ML veterans across the board. The outfield is a potential nightmare, however.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis can play CF but strikes out too much.. I suppose that's fixable, but I'm not holding my breath. Duda looks like a 1B masquerading as an outfielder, I.e., overmatched when it comes to wearing a glove out there. I don't know what to do about Baxter; he was by far the best PH the Mets had last year but he tailed off in the second half. Perhaps that failure was due to his suffering a serious shoulder injury on the play that saved Johan's no-hitter; or maybe playing every day simply exposed the chinks in his offensive armor. Sadly, all of them are LH batters.

Axing Jason Bay was an addition by subtraction. And now Scott Hairston is looking more attractive with every passing day. Ironic. Maybe this Cowgill guy will turn out to be a decent acquisition. At least he's young. And now for the pitching.

Thank heavens Sandy held onto Jon Niese. I think he's going to be another Jerry Koosman. Santana will be lucky if he can resemble the old Johan for another half-season. Dillon Gee is yet another question mark. The final two spots in the rotation fall to Harvey and one of the untested kids who came up at the end of 2012: Hefner or McHugh.

The bullpen is a grab bag of past disappointments (Francisco, Parnell) and unknowns like Eglin and Carson.

If anybody tries to tell us he knows where the Mets will finish in 2013, we'll know that he's been smoking some good stuff.

Assuming Davis doesnt wait for July to get his first hit again (which I dont think he will), there's nothing wrong with your infield. Pitching is above average as well. Unfortunately for met fans, nothing was done about the disaster of an outfield and BP.

I note that the Mets have signed an OF named Andrew Brown. Terrific. Now they should try to sign some player named George Stevens, or at least a guy with the nickname "Kingfish."

Am I dating myself?

Well, it's HOF election day and the attention of baseball fans focuses on the candidacy of the likes of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Will they or won't they get in? Should they or shouldn't they be enshrined? Bonds and Clemens, on the basis of their pre-steroid track records, certainly are worthy of being honored as among the best who ever played the game. Great players, miserable human beings. What penalty, if any, should they pay for cheating in the latter part of their respective careers?

Allow me to make a suggestion: they should be permitted to appear on the HOF ballot, but, if elected, their official enshrinement should be delayed until after their death. You're in, Barry and Roger, but you'll never attend your own induction ceremony nor ever see your name on a Cooperstown plaque.

The same penalty should be imposed upon Pete Rose. His career record is certainly worthy of the HOF, but he bet on baseball (as a manager, not as a player) and that merits a stiff penalty. Rose has already served a prison term and been excluded from the HOF ballot for more than 20 years. Enough, already. Put his name on the ballot and let the jury decide his fate. If they vote him in, let his induction be delayed until after his death.

BTW, I am not an apologist for Pete Rose. I was never a fan of his and I condemn him for betting on the game. But for MLB to have excluded him from the HOF ballot all these years is a miscarriage of justice akin to arresting a man for comitting a crime and sending him directly to jail, without bothering with the matter of a fair trial.

Have you Mets fans seen the photos of Molly Beers, David Wright's fiancee? O-M-G, she's gorgeous! Now I'm worried that David's stats will suffer because he'll be in a constant state of physical exhaustion--for home games, at least.
It's nice to know that the Mets have a player who can compete with Derek Jeter when it comes to bedding beautiful babes.
All things in moderation, David.
