Frankenstien Revisited for the First Time

I recently read Mary Shelly's Frankenstien, often hailed as one of the best known but least read classics. Very different from the movies. People are quick to correct those who call the moster Frankenstien, saying that's the doctor who creates the monster. Well, there's no Dr. Frankenstien either. Niether is there a lab assistant named Igor. Victor Frankenstien is a young college student who stumbles upon the secret of life and creates a large man-like creature. Shelly remains vague as to what the secret is and how Victor goes about creating his being. Unlike the enthusiastic actors in the films, Victor flees when his creation comes to life, leaving him to fend for himself. The creature quickly learns to hide himself from humans who fear him and chase him away. When he finds shelter in a little hut near a cottage, he takes an interest in the family living there and learns the human language by observing them. He grows to love them and even performs secret chores for them. Unfortunately, when he reveals himself, hoping for the family's acceptance, they, too, become frightened and move away from the cottage. Embittered, the creature vows emnity with humans but especially his creator Victor. Victor Frankenstien also develops hatred towards his own creation which intensifies as the creature carries out his vengeance. By the tragic end of the tale, both men regret their actions. In death, the creature realizes the error of his ways and Victor admits his failure to teach and nurture his creation. A horror story and, yet, a story on tolerance and accepting one's responsibility.
