Prejudice and it's Many Forms

In response to the George Zimmerman verdict, President Obama gave a speech about the racism all Black men, himself included, have experienced. Many Black people will scoff at that and say "Yes, but he didn't experience racism on the same level I do.". I've been aware of the prejudices since I was a child. Not all of them. I probably still don't know all of them. We all have them and we all experience them. That's just how many there are. For instance, you may not think all Asians are geniuses or all Jews are cheap but you might think all Italians are in the Mafia. As a New York courier, I'm being racist when I'm temporarily stuck behind slow moving pedestrians on Canal St and get annoyed that folks in Chinatown move slow. I experience racism when I go to make a pick-up or delivery somewhere and the people get confused because I don't look the way they think a messenger should look. Homophobia is a prejudice I wasn't aware of until I realized I'm Gay. Oh, I heard a lot of it but I didn't know what it was. In some ways, it delayed my acceptance of being Gay. I was still in the questioning stage when I would read several definitions of was a Gay person is that turned out not to be true. They favor purple. I like blue. They hate God. I certainly don't. It took a while to find out these ideas were wrong. Experiencing and recognizing prejudices has also made me aware that we sometimes want to wallow in prejudice rather than overcome it. There's a certain excitement, I suppose, in playing the victim. We often read phobia between the lines that was never there. Perhaps that's just a necessary part of growth and learning.

In response to Obama's speech, I'm assuming that George Zimmerman also knows what it's like to be a victim of racism.
