I don't think this is a good idea.

I'm sure the bars appreciate the business. Might even stage having some people be politically incorrect in hopes of incurring a flash mob. Some of them may get a lot more business that way.

I certainly do not think this is a good idea!

I've done this before. It's a really fun way to raise awareness for LGBT causes and fight bigotry at the same time.

"Chance", there have been "Gorilla Bar" flash mobs in a lot of cities around the country. In very few locations do they have the positive longterm effects that the organizers want to congratulate themselves for.

Of course bar owners enjoy the added revenue for the night, but it doesn't transition into anything resembling an open-ended welcome, by any means.

In New Orleans?? Sorry, but "awareness" has been there for a century. The Quarter IS a "gayborhood".

Wouldn't a flash mob in a church be a better idea (assuming they are not disruptive)?

I love how people try to throw opposers off these threads, but they cheer taking over the straights bar...

You keep using that word...

Everyone knows how the rest of that goes.

How is an opposer "thrown off" a thread? Is your avatar (if you had one) grabbed by the collar, and tossed through the mouse port, slamming the space bar behind you?

I see conversations go on for MONTHS with "opposers". They are not thrown off. The only people removed are those who can't keep from violating the terms of service, and I rarely see even THAT happen.

As for "taking over" the bar, at least the article's author understood the irony in his use. You have no such subtlety. The bar remains the property of the owners. The staff expresses shock that they had an "anti-gay" reputation, and they work to change it. The "invaders" are INVITED BACK. You didn't read it, did you?

"try" to throw them off...
see that part, yes they try to throw them off but they cannot as you correctly point out...

see, you guys want an area just for you so you guys can discuss your issues...don't pretend that is not true...shall I c/p from the gay cafe thread?

and you are adamant that straights not have one...

of course they were "invited back"...your silly shock games are stoopid to the rest of us...

you're not shocking, in fact, you're not special at all...

That is part of the problem- every gay bar in New Orleans that is worth going to is in the French Quarter, but locals usually hang out in little enclaves tucked away in the back neighborhoods or the suburbs because of all the tourism. Many of the bars outside the Quarter are a bit less than gay friendly too. Once, my ex-boyfriend and I were told outright to "cut out that gay sh!t" and "take it to the French Quarter". It was actually kind of funny what happened next. I was there with about a dozen of my metal-head friends (all straight and two from a platinum-record band) and hearing the bar owner say what he did infuriated them so much that our whole krew left and pretty much emptied out the bar.

Which means you were lying or just flat wrong.

This particular issue isn't about "gays" vs "straights". It's about "people who believe in freedom for all" vs "people who believe in freedom for themselves because they're similar to the mainstream, while anyone who is different or non-mainstream should have to waive their rights and hide".

Straights have PLENTY of places to hang out and discuss things. SOME of them even enjoy and welcome our company, and don't want the "space" labeled as "gay" OR "straight". Some of them welcome the idea of emptying these spaces OUT of the narrow-minded haters that are in their ranks.
straight shooter wrote:

Oh THAT makes sense. It was shocking and stupid, so OF COURSE they were invited back! Perfect logic. I ALWAYS invite people back when they were shocking and stupid, don't you?
straight shooter wrote:

That would be the general idea, but we'll always have people like you, who WANT us to be "special" so you can pretend that there's some reason to hate and exclude us. If we weren't "special" to you, then you wouldn't notice us at all. But here you are, doing just that, as if you can't help it...

Of course, you either run to porn writing, or having wet dreams of physical violence in your constant postings under false unregistered names to Topix. Are there ANY dangerous thoughts you do NOT have?

Add anti Semitic behavior to your crimes. Are there ANY pleasant traits in you, or are you just one bundle of anger and violence and hate?

Once again, you have a true hard on for gay sex and cannot dream up enough ways to discuss it and think that by dreaming up sweaty vivid descriptions of gay acts, this makes you look like you are demeaning it. It is like you are writing Valentines to gay porn.

You're either lying about people getting thrown off or delusional, because if you say things you Fa$$ots don't want to hear or don't like, you report, especially the ones that work for topix. They remove all your post and ban your IP address so you can't get back on. I know this for a fact. They do this to me on most days 1 - 2 times daily. Doesn't do them any good because I'm just a little smarter than they are. I can be back on in 30 sec. If I choose. A lot of people wouldn't know how and can't get back on. You'll say I violate the terms of agreement, maybe I do now, maybe not, but in the beginning when they banned me for no good reason, that's when I changed. You might say I'm whining, I'm not whining. I could care less anymore. They can delete my post so they feel better about themselves, but they can't ban me. They've tried, over and over again.
Topix forums are supposed to be for respectful conversation and debate about the issues of the day. You do no good via the kind of language you use and incidiary statements you make. I have not seen you even once engage someone you thought was gay in any kind of nominally reasonable or mutually respectable adult way. It's no wonder Topix keeps banning you, and I know all too well you're not so smart because you figured out how to change you're IP address and/or delete cookies. I know ten fn programming languages, and I find you touting evading the "censors" as evidence of you're supposed greater intelligence entirely amusing!

I am sure that's how you'd frame the issue, but its not very accurate...
