100 years young: Centenarians share stories, sense of humor

Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

The moon landing was amazing, but an event closer to home also stands out in the memory of 102-year-old Margaret Favrot.

CENTENARIANS

Remember Pearl Harbor -- Keep America Alert!

America's oldest living Medal of Honor recipient, living his 101st year is former enlisted Chief Petty Officer, Aviation Chief Ordnanceman (ACOM), later wartime commissioned Lieutenant John W. Finn, U. S. Navy (Ret.). He is also the last surviving Medal of Honor, "The Day of Infamy", Japanese Attack on the Hawaiian Islands, Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, 7 December 1941.

(Now deceased)'Navy Centenarian Sailor', 103 year old, former enlisted Chief Petty Officer, Aviation Chief Radioman (ACRM, Combat Aircrewman), later wartime commissioned Chief Warrant Officer Julio 'Jay' Ereneta, U. S. Navy (Ret.), is a thirty year career veteran of World War One and World War Two. He first flew aircrewman in August 1922; flew rearseat Radioman/Gunner (1920s/1930s) in the tactical air squadrons of the Navy's first aircraft carriers, USS LANGLEY (CV-1) and USS LEXINGTON (CV-2).

Despite the history they've seen and the lives they've lived, some things, Werner said, never change.

"It's all the same," he said, with a knowing grin. "You have to work for a living."

Remember that, youngsters.

Nice write up, Ashley Meeks.

Only one thing missing.

It should have been about 5 times longer.

These folks have to have some real doozies to talk about if you ask them to speak. And as long as they have their memories and interested folk to listen,
sit back and soak it up.

What? No mention of them being vegans, practising meditation or exercising five times per week?

I agree with stopTAGGINGourWALLS, these folks are walking history lessons. My 91 year old (well, on March 3rd), grandfather has taught me so much about history and life itself! Thankfully, like these folks, his mind is still with us....

Articles like this are a very needed balance between
the chosen to publish and republish awful, bad, and sensational news that pushes the mantra:

"if it bleeds it leads."

That's just the cheap and easy way out. Writing a story from a police report is not creative journalism. It is re-writing a public record. Or stealing your story from the AP or internet.

There are tons of healthy, wanted, and available
human interest stories in Las Cruces and the surrounding area. Cultivate these stories by interviewing the schools, recreational areas, senior citizen hang outs, the 4-H, Scouts, local sports leagues.....you get it.

And put them on the front pages for recognigion.
Not buried near the want ads.
