Among teens, who's gay is less clear than in past

Aug 10, 2009 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: USA Today

Who's gay and who's not is less clear than it used to be among today's young people - and that's complicating how researchers conduct studies on the sexual behavior of teens and young adults, a developmental psychologist who studies gays, lesbians, and bisexuals told a session today at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association ...

They aren't actually. Of course you would notice though, that is where your gaydar from being bisexual comes in.

It was a joke , I guess they will have to delete a few more of the most offensive posts before it is over with this one. Very few of the guys I know are "gay enough" for you to ever guess , but even the ones that are , are some of the biggest men I know. Kids that are brave enough to come out while still in school, deserve the support and protection of the schools they attend. And the respect of everyone.

The Nazis tried that already. I believe that's the origin of the pink triangle.

P.S. I know you meant that as a joke..

I'm wondering how they actually word questions on these surveys. Do they just ask, "Are you heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual?" Are they given a scale on which to rate themselves?

I think a paradigm shift is needed in the study of sexuality. Gender and orientation seem to have very little to do with one another. There are people attracted women and there are people attracted to men. Period.(There are people attracted to both, but that doesn't negate my statement.) Breaking it down into gay, bi, and straight just seems to introduce confusion in researchers and everyone else. I think it would be easier to determine why people, irrespective of their own gender, are attracted to one and/or the other.

Why are people attracted to women?
Why are people attracted to men?

These are relevant questions.

Why are some men attracted to other men and some women attracted to other women? To me, this unnecessarily parses the underlying question down to a point that makes it difficult to understand the results by introducing an false condition. Would the results even be relevant?

A paradigm shift like this would eliminate labels like gay and straight. You would still be either monosexual or bisexual, but it would be immaterial.

... ok, I'm done rambling for now.

It is less clear than in the past. There were always gays that did'nt show any indication of being gay,but I mean, for example. This young man(19)who has sex with me,claims to be straight, shaved his pubic region, legs, ass and chest. He's not on a swim team. His freinds tell him he's extra hairy.Thats what attracted me to him,was those hairy legs when I first saw him in shorts. He has no girlfreind, and with his physical appearance,he can easily get one,I know of several girls that want him.He says hehas sex with them,I seen him kiss girls, yet he has sex with me.Use to be that any guy that shaved his legs, ass, chest was either on a swim team or gay.Use to be that any great looking guy without a girlfreind was also considered gay.Now that guys do these things, like shaving those areas, was gay,now I'm not 100% on if this guy is gay,or Bi.or straight! To have sex with a guy 30 years older,he has no need to do so with me.His looks he can get any girl.

Not in the black community; I see a lot of people(men and women) that are clearly gay in the black communtiy. It's seems to be a lot harder tell gay people in other ethnicities.
Gay black people seem to stick out like a sore thumb.

When gay kids have willingly done that, they have often been suspended from school.

They wore signs saying , "I am gay" ? I mean that is OK but , sort of a bad thing to single them out like that , I had a good high school career, but I was mostly in the closet, most of the time , I was like a lot of kids , in a clique that would have not accepted it , hell , I sort of had trouble accepting it , lol. I wish they offered more support to kids in that situation for sure.

I know that there is a long way to go here, but maybe--just maybe--we're starting to see a shift in the attitude of our society. A lot of young people are more accepting of each other, are more interested in seeing success in their friends rather than putting others down. I also think that the exposure of gays in the media is contributing to this. People see it as different, but not necessarily "bad".

Yes, it's going to take a while for this attitude to permeate through to some older generations, but we have to start somewhere.

The guy is clearly bisexual, and can't make up his mind yet if girls or guys turn him on more. Cute guys can get girls by the buckets full, but the real turn on for him is getting gay guys to enjoy. Part of that turn on, is the fact he pretends to be straight while someone else does the seducing, as if he somehow remains straight in the process. He also likes you not just because of the cash, but because it's the turn on of the older man/father figure that helps his straight seduction fantasies.

And concerning the OPs news piece, the deal is more males and females today are less hung up about gay/straight issues than they were 50 years ago. So yea, it might be more difficult to pigeon hole questionnaire respondents than it was in decades past. So I would take that to mean more people today are more willing to experiment with the same sex, or at least admit to it, than in the past. Which is a good thing, since uninformed and false sexual fears and inhibitions are what leads to unhappy people and unhappy relationships and even hatred and violence.

It sounds like the psychologist lives in a binary world.

Everyone knows it's like handedness: A spectrum, usually, but not always, with a major and a minor, subject to social conditioning ("reparations therapy"/pressure to not be left handed) or to temporary necessities (broken arm/prison.)

And it's not so different now, except that questioning people or bisexual people today can be more open about their process as opposed to the 1940s, when the only expression might have been on the sly in the back row of a Times Sq. moviehouse while the wife was at home.

They wore a gay pride btton, a gay pride flag, or a shirt or something like that expressing their support ofr equal rights for gay people. Sometimes even the str8 kids will do so.

And oftentimes, they are illegally suspended by the school for doing so.

Most schools do not believe in the students Constitutional Right to Freedom Of Speech.

The schools should be teaching Freedom Of Sppech, NOT violating it.

I agree about the freedom of speech thing for sure , they banned T-shirts with even the nike logo in some schools here , or any message clothes , because some were offensive to some people , a guy got ticketed for the shyt happens bumper sticker , funny and tacky but not illegal in my opinion. The kids expressing themselves with a pride button is as far from offensive as it gets , unless you are a nazi. I have to remove an ear ring every day before I go in to the office where I work , because some people think it is inappropriate on men , huh ? It is like 1973 around here in 2009. I am gay but three other straight guys do the same routine every day , we are all under 30 , the people running the compnay are all over, I think 58 is the youngest one , a lot of these things are generational and will change as the younger people take over the mgt of the country and business world. I know you are like a libertarian and dont like the govt much but I think they should offer more outreach to gay teens , especially in school situations and fund some programs to protect them and educate the other kids about the situation.

Having been a bank bookkeeper for about 20 years, I know what you mean about the ultra conservative dress code.....but they told me about it when they hired me. The important thing to remember that as you up and comers take chare.....remember.

I like the schools that have GSA organizations, it's a step in the right direction.

Sadly many people confuse education with indoctrination.....that's only one of the many issues that need to be overcome.

Yes, I can get over the ear ring thing I guess , they are very conservative and a very old company , but I am way in the back office doing research , we only come out on a couple of days a week to present and report , I have to be in full dress for those , I had to cut my hair to above the collar and off the ears , no sideburns either , I don't have any but I would like to try someday to grow them. lol. I am surprised I got pass the back ground check actually. lol , they dig into everything to get the clearance to be here. almost like the govt.

Yes , they consider it "leading" to educate gay kids about things, they are already pretty sure by high school about their sexuality and it is not going to "tip the scales" to the gay way to help them cope with the stuff they face. I know some schools have groups now , we did not back when I was in high school , we were a silent minority mostly. I wish I had been more open about it back then , these kids today are braver and less worried about status I think than we were.
