Review: Terrapin Tile

I hired Terrapin Tile to grout a brick wall I had put up. They visited my house, stated it was easily doable, and should take about one day. On the day that the work was to be done, I returned home at noon to find that they had smeared grout all over the face of the brick, ruining a section of the wall.

Fortunately, a small section is all they did. They had left without making any attempt to contact me and left a note basically saying "Sorry, this job is bigger than we thought. Goodbye."

A tile contractor should know not to smear grout over a brick face because once grout fills the crevasses of the brick, it is nearly impossible to remove. The wall I spent months meticulously putting up was ruined in about an hour.

I now have to purchase more bricks to replace the ones they ruined, tear out everything they did, and redo it all myself. I will NEVER use Terrapin Tile or Tom Owens again.

P.S. - As an addendum to my previous review, the owner of Terrapin Tile emailed me in an extremely confrontational and unprofessional letter calling me names, insulting me, and being generally childish and unprofessional. I will soon be submitting a report about this to the Better Business Bureau.

That's very strange. I've used Tom on several projects and have enjoyed working with him every time. I've given his name out to my friends and family and have only heard great things about the work he has done for them. It's a shame to hear something like this about such a good contractor and wonder if this is really how all of this went down? I guess we'll never know.

Different people have different experiences, I guess. Nobody does a 100% good job all the time, nor do they do a 100% bad job all the time.

I just had a bad experience that got progressively worse as Tom became more and more unprofessional. I really wish I had taken pictures of the job he did to show people how bad it was. Guess that's a lesson learned for me for the future.

I have had nothing but a great experience with Tom (Holmes, not Owens). He is professional, personable and very helpful in making suggestions for design, etc. He completed the job on schedule, as promised and was considerate of my home and needs. I would not hesitate to recommend Terrapin tile.

I needed a 300 sq ft bathroom tiled earlier this year so I called Terrapin Tile and spoke to a man named Tom Holmes. Gave him my contact info and he said he was busy but would call back with a time to instpect the job. Three weeks later, no answer. Called back and he said he didn't remember speaking with me. Gave him my contact info again and he said he would meet at my house at 10am. I took off work that day and waited all day. No one ever showed. Called Tom at 4pm wondering why he didn't show. No answer. I am taking my business elsewhere.

P.P.S. - Tom has decided to try to silence me by having any negative review of his business removed from the Internet. If he had made ANY effort whatsoever to make this right, I would have voluntarily deleted all of these reviews. Instead, he engages in underhanded and deceitful practices to make himself look better by trying to silence anyone who leaves him a bad review. Every time I think this contractor can sink no lower, he still manages to show me that there is yet another layer of unprofessionalism and immaturity. Don't be surprised if you have a bad experience and write a negative review of this company if it suddenly disappears one day.

I am the owner of Terrapin Tile. Hopefully these bogus posts from "Paul" and the Bill Halvertson that does not exist will not sway you to work with us. We are an excellant company to work with and stand behind what we do with great pride. I look forward to working with you in the future.

These posts are not bogus. Tom claimed he could do a job for an agreed upon price. He was unable to deliver and has tried to blame the entire thing on me ever since, calling ME the liar.

Tom, you stood there, looked at the job that needed to be done and said to me "YES, I can do this." But you DIDN'T do it! It boggles my mind that you can accept a job, fail to complete it, and then say that it wasn't your fault. Rather than simply say "I'm sorry but I cannot perform the job for the agreed upon price" you INSIST upon taking every chance you can to divert attention away from the damage you did and your failure to complete the job, even going so far as to claim that anyone who has a BAD experience with you is somehow made up. Accept the responsibility as a business owner for the fact that you made a mistake instead of pointing at other people.

I used to care that I was being slandered and my honesty questioned, and that Tom refused to admit that he had made a mistake but I'm washing my hands of this. Life is too short to waste on this kind of garbage.

I'm not sure about Bill but i can vouch for Paul's Comments.. I was at his house 3 days after Terrapin Tile was there and saw the mess they made of his wall. Instead of piping grout between the brick which is what you are supposed to do in this situation they smeared the grout over the tumbled brick as if it was smooth ceramic tile, ruining the section of the wall completely.. Worse yet they left the wall in that condition to dry making it imposable to remove any of the grout from the face of the brick. I also saw the note that was left behind no a scrap of paper.. I actually suggested to him that he should sue Terrapin Tile to replace the section of wall that they clearly ruined due to their incompetence.

Tom and his company Terrapin Tile installed the tile floor in our kitchen several years ago. The tile was very large and heavy. They did a wonderful job. The job was done on-time. He was very polite and pleasure to work with. He made several good recommendations which I am glad we followed. We liked it very much and we asked him to do also a small bathroom which was very tricky. It was done beautifully. I would easily hire Tom for another job again.
