Who wants to start a noisy neighbors survivors group? Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks a noisy neighbor is a torture. I moved in with my brother for various reasons, and he lives in an apartment below a nutty section 8 Vietnam vet and his wife who PACE AROUND THE APARTMENT ALL DAY AND NIGHT LONG! Now it wouldn't be so bad if it was just in the daytime, or if the floors up there weren't so creaky as to sound like a 100 year old house! I have become unable to sleep work or concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes. The police say they can't do anything. HELP!

Well, since I seem to have nowhere else to turn but section 8 myself, I've decided to make this my journal. This morning, 3:30 am woken up by loud pacing and thumping. 5:30 am Ditto.

Also, could anyone give me advice on the best way to record these sounds? I have a small microcassette recorder, but it only seems to get the loud cracking sound of the wood in the ceiling, which actually should be evidence enough. The noise level on the microcassette is just too high. I also have a stereo cassette deck with stereo 1/4" mic plugs also but no mic.

Nobody should have their quality of life so infringed upon. I live in a neighborhood where the silence is positively deafening and there are a million stars over my house. It was only after we left LI that I realized, people DON'T have to live like that!! I wish I could offer you some other advice, but I am sorry you have to live like that. It's an outrage - the whole friggin thing on Long Island. Absolutely outrageous.

Sat Nov.3 8:30AM-10:30AM, 6:15PM-7:00PM as well as STOMPING on the floor. 7:30pm, 8:50PM, 10PM, 11:20PM. If I enter a single time, it means the pacing went on for less than say 15 mins or so, but was definitely more than just a walk to the kitchen or bathroom and back. 2 things I want people to understand: 1) THIS IS NOT JUST NORMAL WALKING AROUND IN AN APARTMENT. Anyone I have had over here who has heard it agrees. 2) BEFORE ANYONE GETS THERE HAIR IN A BUNCH, I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST VETERANS. My grandfather served in WWII, and I have many friends who are vets, but OBVIOUSLY THIS GUY HAS NEVER GOTTEN THE HELP HE NEEDS.

You know what the best way to drown out outside noises that may disturb sleep? Turn on a fan or an air purifier to give "white noise" to drown out any noise that may bother you. I do it and m never bothered by outside noise.

and if you want dead silence, go live in the woods or some small rural town, not in a highly populated city or suburban setting.

See, the problem is it's not fair to just say go live in the woods. I live in NYC in high latino community where many members LOVE to play their music loud all freakin night long. Why should I have to move to the woods? Why shouldn't they have to move to the woods to enjoy their music as loud as they want. I can't just pick up and leave NYC, it's not a practical solution for most people stuck with evil noisy people. There has to be enforceable quiet behavior. They should go to a club if they want to play their music. And loud stompers (I have those too) should be forced to live on the first floor. I'm so sick of jerks who always think they have the right to do what they want. And the damn cops never come. I can't tell you how many 311 calls I've made, and various neighbors over music. Never come. I want my freaking money back.

FYI, if everyone posted to RottenNeighbors.com , then I'd know where NOT to move too. Doing your homework, as Mike suggests, is really hard. I check crime stats, drive through the neighborhoods at all differents hours and days. But, it doesn't help. It's just not that easy to determine whether a particular building, block, or area is noise free.

I think we should build a community like Parkway Village or StyvacentTown just for victims of noise pollution. Then at least everyone will respect everyone else.

Instead of calling 311 [which is a waste] try calling 911 and tell the dispatcher that you heard what sounded like a shot. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I've actually thought about that or saying that there is loud shouting, screaming and they sound like they're killing each other. The only thing is what excuse do you use the next time and the time after that......the boy who cried wolf ??

The problem is fueled by alcahol! The bastards have no respect for any thing! They do this without even thinking about it! This is how they were raised! Their upbringing was not what it should be, the sow that had these ignorant offspring should have killed them off with an abortion!

I was looking for the solution on a similar situation and found this your post. Glad to see that I'm not alone and am not paranoid (as my landlord thinks that I'm too sensitive).

My new neighbors upstairs keep pattering, jumping and throeing heavy things on a floor during all the day long from 10am till 2am. Among a big heavy guy and his rude girlfriend there is a 2-3 years kid which runs barefoot constantly back and force throughout all the day and long after midnight. The rumble they produce makes me unable to sleep and therefore to work productive for almost a month. I'm desperate! They do not want to negotiate even by wearing soft sleepers or so.

Have you found any solution?

Same story, loud parties / direct LIVE AMPLIFIED MUSIC BOOMING Until 2-3am a couple of times this HOLIDAY season. Really upset with the lack of respect that my latino neighbors have for anyone. Bought in a nice area 7 years ago to get away from 911. Moved to a quiet place (way before them) where all the ol'timers were. NICE & QUIET!Then some of them decided to make truckloads of money selling their homes because they were retired. Okay, good for them.(not for me)

Perfect storm a brewin'.
We went on to have another 2 kids...Prettied up the house & spent everything on the home-roof, furnace, french doors, cobblestone walks... every little repair, the whole nine...Oblivious to the fact that the SUB-PRIME banks were giving big bucks to the "undesireables".

Then (3years ago), the late night parties started!!! Still trying to be non confrontational, but losing patience...called cops several times one night. They Never even turned the music down when the cops were there. And the COPS parked out front but were too chicken to even get out and ask them to turn it down. So much for authority.

Here's the hard part.

The last time they had a party, my (7)year old wakes up about 10:15pm and tells me he cant sleep again and if I can go next door to tell them to turn off the music. Then my daughter(5) comes in crying because she feels terrified, and of course that sets the baby(2)off (crying)too.

HOW DO YOU TELL YOUR 7,5 & 2 Year old Children NOT TO HATE THEIR NEIGHBORS? My 7 year old hates the neighbors now because they've woke him up several times with their LIVE AMPLIFIED MUSIC. They dont start until after 10pm.
How do you teach your kids not to hate their neighbors? They no longer want to play with the little one next door. It's not the child's fault her parents are doing this...but, nonetheless, she will be raised this way.

SELL MY HOUSE, HA!
I already tried. Have you seen the bloodbath out there with what's going on in real estate? Now the banks don't want to give the mortgages away anymore. But...TOO LATE, THEY'VE ALREADY GIVEN IT TO THE UNDESIREABLES WE ARE ALL COMPLAINING ABOUT. Oh yea, they (undesireables) won't lose their homes (if that's what you're thinking), BECAUSE THEY HAVE OTHER WAYS OF GETTING MONEY, things you and I won't do.(MAYBE A LIL'DOGFIGHTING, COCKFIGHTING, GAMBLING, PROSTITUTION, HOME INVASIONS, etc.) They don't care. They want you to move so that they can get your crown jewel of a house (all nicely done and ready for them).
