Hello my husband and I are wanting to relocate next year after I finish school. We have a one year old daughter and plan to have another child once we move. We have been looking for a place to move to and Savannah caught our attention. Can someone tell me a little more about what it is like living here? Is there much culture? Is it a good place to raise children? I am really wanting a town with southern hospitality. Would Savannah be it? Thank You in advance for your resonses.

I have done a little research online but we do not know anyone there. Still haven't had any responses about it...

I just relocated to Savannah from Atlanta and I absolutely love it here. I live on the Islands and the schools here are wonderful. There are (like all cities) bad parts of town where crime rates are high, but overall a very nice city with lots of things to do. The people are friendly, the food is great, the parks are beautiful, and the history is rich. The beach is fabulous and you are very close to Florida and the Carolinas for quick weekend getaways.

@ Jemgirl thank you for your response. It looks great from what I have seen online. My husband and I are planning a trip to Savannah sometime this summer to check it out in person. @ bobq...I am a democrat :)

If you like your children, and care about their safety and the quality of education they recieve....do not even think about moving to Savannah Ga.

It's not any different than any other large city. It has good and bad areas. We've had 14 homicides this year, but 12 of them were involved with drugs/dealing. Almost all of them were in the same area. I have a 2 year old and a baby, and we go for walks in the evening, play outside all day, etc. I don't know how the education is yet though. To save yourself the hassle of traffic and tourists I would recommend looking at the Rincon or Pooler area. Only 15-25 minutes from downtown Savannah.

Forget Rincon and Pooler....Rincon is in Effingham County, now known as "Methingham county"....and pooler....full of all the same druggies as Savannah....
Move either to Tybee Island,....or richmond hill

But Peter, if you cannot afford to live in a safe area for your family, then are you doing the right thing for them moving into an area that has more crime than most larger cities ??
Savannah has a high robbery, burgulary, car theft, purse snatching, rape, drugs, than most in the surrounding areas.....I am from Savannah, and I love it...my family has been there since 1733...but there is no way in hell I would ever live there again...its just too dangerous...my mothers car was stolen 4 times in one year!! My sister had her purse taken 3 times!! and this was in the artsy fartsy "historic district" that everyone raves about!
I have a condo at Tybee...when I am in town I head straight for Tybee and I stay on the Island until I leave...it costs alot yes...but basically, you are paying for the kind of enviroment you want to live in.

We live in the "new" Pooler area (if you want to call it that) and absolutely love it. We haven't seen any of the crime you're talking about, but we have lived here less than a year. And we do live in a pretty expensive neighborhood...so never mind...I guess I really don't have a dog in the fight :)

Thank you all for the information. I will definately take it into consideration. Can you tell me how the weather is down there as far as earthquakes, hurricanes...what kind of "disaster" weather do you have there? Where I live we have tornadoes and live on the new madrid vault. When our "big one" comes my town along with many others will be non existant. I digress lol. Anyway I would just like to know how safe the weather is. I don't want to freak out everytime it storms..

I've been living in the Savannah area for about 10 years now. I love it. The school system leaves something to be desired, I live in Liberty county...I hear the schools in Rincon are the best in the area. Richmond Hill is wonderful, that's where I spend most of my time but really, you just can't beat the beauty of Savannah. It's a very charming little city. Live on the outskirts and go downtown for your Friday and Saturday night getaways...good luck and be blessed.
