Tybee is a town over a hundred years old. We have our own police dept., fire dept (part paid), grocery store, library, doctor, bank, drug store, dentist and a half dozen churches. We are a small town with around 3000 residents living here full time. During the summer months our population will swell to 30,000 people on the week end. There are condo's and houses but not so many apartments on a yearly rental. It is a small island about 3 1/2 miles by 3/4 miles. Because of supply and demand, housing is fairly expensive. It is 17 miles to down town Savannah.

It would be a bad decision on your part to even consider moving to Tybee Island, GA I have lived in Tybee Island several years ago - here are some of the reasons why I would not move to Tybee - or even visit: Tybee Island is a barrier island and will bear to full force of any adverse weather coming in from the Atlantic - flooding is inevitable Tybee Island has one (1) grocery store where you can purchase all your grocery needs - at highly inflated prices Tybee Island is connected to the mailland by only one (1) road - Hwy 80 - and in the case of high tide - the road is flooded - you are stuck in Tybee Island when a hurricane comes anywhere near the coast Tybee Island is badly overrun during summer week-ends, and absolutely dead during the winter months Tybee Island public services/police are highly unprofessional and pull a gun first - and ask questions later ! Tybee Island real estate is highly overpriced. You would be far better off to consider Hilton Head, SC if you want to be close to the beach ! Hilton Head has all what Tybee Island has to offer, however, they care about their visitors - not so Tybee Island ! Hope to above helps ! |

Tybee is a beautiful, wonderful place to both live and visit. The facts are that Tybee has not been hit with a Cat 3 hurricane or higher since 1893---118 years and counting. yes it has one grocery stor but there are several supermarkets within 20 minutes drive-- and the prices at the IGA on Tybee aren't THAT much higher.
Unless the hurricane is all of a sudden, you won't get stuck on Tybee--- hurricane tracking technology has improved since 1893. Tybee is less overrun than Rehobeth, Ocean City, Myrtle and hilton head to name a few.(Btw I think HHI is terrible.) Tybee's real estate market hs PLUMMETTED during the housing crisis. It is now cheaper than just about anywhere els except some parts in FLA and maybe Myrtle. My favorite time to visit Tybee is actually winter-- the peacefulness is amazing. Last year we never even left the island at all in our two week stay. |

I would love to move to Tybee as well. We visit twice a year. I have always enjoyed the IGA there, the people are friendly. Walmart isn't that far away for more choices. It is also more convient to get to the beach than HHI, and HHI has all all those round abouts that make driving a pain.

My husband and I love Tybee. I wish we could afford to live there. Some locals I have spoken with say the property taxes are extremely high and on thr rise. There was even an article in the Tybee Breeze recently about this very thing, long time locals not being able to afford to live there. This is so sad because the families that have been there for so long are part of what makes Tybee a unique small town. I know the town has to have money but I sure hope Tybee doesn't become too commercialized, in my life time anyways.

I love Tybee! The only thing that keeps me in TN is my husband. I love the relaxing on the beach and the fact that it is often "dead" is such a good thing. We are all different and if that is what you want, go for it.

Are there any long term house rentals a few blocks from the beach and if so, what do u think about raising a family there. They would attend school on wilmington or savannah.

Moving to Tybee this fall. I am done with $pending too much for heating oil. I swim to keep in shape and the water is warmer than Cape Cod.

Looking to possibly purchase a condo in the Savannah/Tybee area. Does anyone know about Merritt at Whitmarsh? It would just be a partial year residence. Could it be rented out for a vacation rental? Or is too far from anything to be desirable for that? Thoughts?
