ISLAND PARK: Students get OK to choose high school

The Island Park school board unanimously voted 5-0 yesterday to allow its high-school students to attend either West Hempstead High or Long Beach High, leaving the ultimate decision to individual parents.

I think it was fair. IP has been going to West Hempstead for 40 years and has grown close to them as they have to us. Too much underhanded things were happening (LB walk through 2 weeks ago when a decision has not been made and the principal stating see you next year to the kids??) what was that s**t? The BS put out by someone that property value would go 30%?? If you don't have a HS you don't have a HS! Driving 10 min or 20 min to go to one will not change the value of your house when buyers look at the HS stats and police reported incidents for LB HS.(Last weeks fight reported by news 12 was not race related....right)
LB had a large tax increase and only wants our money to fix their crumbling buildings with out doing anything for our kids.
With choice we will se how many go to LB.

Long Beach High School is one of the worst and most dangerous High Schools on LI.

There is too much racial tension, gang activity and violence: the School is a breeding-ground for danger.

Are you joking? LBHS has a good amount of fights,but saying there is racial tension,gang activity,violence and a breeding-ground for danger is blowing it out of proportion. If the school was still in the shape it was 5-6 years ago,I'd agree with you,but your making them sound way worse than they really are.

Have you ever driven past WEst Hempstead High School when the kids get out of school at the end of the day? Take a look, my friend. Also, why not go to their next HS graduation this coming June and sit down in whatever auditorium they hol dit in- and you'll get a taste of Ebonics. Caucasians were indeed the minority at the graduation, so go visit both schools before you make ignorant statements like that. Cultural diversity is EVERYWHERE, not just Long Beach.

Before you make such statements be sure to attend a graduation because in my experience that is not the case. Let's face it quality of character can not be judged or determined by skin color If you feel it necessary to send your
child to a school that is made up of only one ethnic group than you had better buy an island somewhere because LI is diverse and that is not a bad thing

West Hempstead isn't as bad as people make it out to be,it gets a bad rep automatically just for being apart of Hempstead. Obviously it isnt the best community on LI but it sure isnt as bad as some make it out to be.

Like no other schools experience these type of things? Overall LBHS isn't bad,yeah they have their problems with hoodlums,they aren't a "bad" school at all. And please don't tell me you take those news articles seriously,they blow every topic out of proportion.

A kid was shot last night after giving up his bike in IP. The person (not going to describe him)on the bike proceeded to go over the bridge to LB. I don't see any problems here. Now the hoods come to IP to do their shopping. I guess that's ok with you.
Simple fix?? when you find the F's let them do some serious community service where they live after doing time. Let them be seen in a bright orange jump suite cleaning the area for a few months. It does seem to work for Sheriff Joe arpiao.

Not saying there aren't kids that are problems in LB and that there doesn't need to be a charge taken against them,but that doesn't make LBHS "bad" overall. Every town has its own sorts of problems. LB's happens to be some of the African American kids living in the town.
