For six years, Modesto Roque went to work at the sprawling Silver Line window factory in North Brunswick -- a union job with health insurance and wages that started at $7.50 an hour and rose to $9.25. No one, ...

Oregon,

You can't pretend to ignore the facts: 85% of illegal immigrants come from Latin America. When they set up housekeeping, they are keeping their culture and transforming the faces of the communities and cities where the take over into unrecognizability. Sheer numbers have had this effect. I don't recall having to Press 2 for Russian, Chinese, Armenian, or French, do you?

A factionalized society is one that leads to ethnic strife, and acknowledging that fact is NOT racist nor xenophobic. It's a truth that cultural anthropologists know full well. So, get off your self-righteous high horse. It really doesn't wash. I think you're in the woods somewhere holed up from the rains of Oregon and without experience with which to input. Books are educational, but prose may not mimic life.

According to the federation for American immigration reform out of Washington,D.C., Approximately three million illegals(mostly mexican)cost American taxpayers around nine billion dollars each year, just in the state of California alone.
The pro-illegal posters will refute your numbers based on the "agenda" this agency has (opposed to illegal immigration). Further, they will point out to you that the Fed has not kept statistics on who is/is not illegal.

That said, the stats that come out of L.A. County which I posted are the result of a recent mandate in L.A. that social services collect this information. These are the earliest figures available subsequent to the mandate and are not open for debate from the pro-illegal posters. Just the facts - plain and simple and very very telling.

in labor camps and make them pay outrageuos payments for the time they were secretly here. They should pay back taxes, double for drivers license, etc etc. If there kids were in school, make them pay it back through forced labor. They should be makgde to do years of community service, much like dui's and criminals.

I am going to ignore the fact that you did not receive a proper education. The employers of illegal immigrants often pay taxes, their landlords pay property taxes and incomes taxes and they pay sales taxes and fees.

If you had bothered to pay attention in school instead of sitting in the back day dreaming, you would not be worried about losing your job to a dirt poor immigrant with few job skills.

Thanks for proving my point (yet again) that the illegal immigration debate is really about fear, laziness, bigotry and racism.

Can't never could, Oregon. What do YOU suggest? We throw our hands up and wave the white flag? Well, many of us aren't quite ready to throw in the towel, and we've actively working toward correcting some of the imbalance - WHERE we have influence. It goes to the Federal Reserve, the tightening on credit coming our way, and the potential for a lengthy recession at best.
I'm not going to endorse importing more poverty at the expense of ANY American workers. 7.6 million Americans showed up on the January unemployment roles - those who haven't been out of work for so long they've stopped receiving unemployment (how many of those are out there?).
We do not need, no want 14 million illegal immigrants to support in this country, and I do not give a rat's a** where they come from. If life was so bad south of the border, how is it they they are so well fed they can perform all this manual labor they supposedly contribute? Abject poverty means malnutrition, not lack of air conditioning. Bleed your heart somewhere else, or take a closer look at Americans in Appalachia who live like the same people who cross our borders. Americans come FIRST - not last in America. Sorry you have such a diffcult time grasping the concept.
I'm not confused, and Mike Antonovich has nothing to do with my personal political persuasions. I don't know where you came up with that idea simply because he reported the hard facts on the cost of illegals in L.A. County. Sheesh.
Ron Paul appeals to many people across party lines, but it didn't work out for him. Cie La Vie. Anything but the status quo, and certainly neither Hillary or McCain has said anything that appeals to me. And, I will routinely cross party lines (same stuff, just a different uniform) to vote out of office any rep in my State who votes consistently in favor of big business at the expense of the middle class.
If you are going to debate this point then you need to actually pay attention to the arguments on both sides. I have already said time and again what the solution is.
Stop voting right wing corporate hacks into office. Stop subsidizing agricultural conglomerates and megacorporations in general. Stop supporting right wing policies that impoverish Americans and Mexican alike. Fix the source of the problem and the symptoms will go away.
Illegal immigration is a mixed bag. It provides you, me and everyone else in the USA with cheaper food, cheaper homes, cheaper nannies, cheaper landscaping and pool cleaning. We have all benefited from this cheap labor pool.
Think more clearly. The war in Iraq, at $2.5 billion every week, also uses non-American labor in the form of workers from East Asia. They are doing the work that US soldiers used to do. Why aren't people up in arms over that?
For every 1 US service person in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is likely to be 1 privatized (and possible non-American) support person there. Why aren't people freaked out over that?
Mike Antonovich apparently does not want hispanics to take power in his area. That is his problem and, considering the demographics, a losing proposition for him to boot. Given this attitude, anything he says has to be taken with a great deal of skepticism.
While corporations go offshore, while foreigners subsidize our increasing indebtedness, while oil tops $100/bbl, while big global business takes over our court system, while health care rises to 20% of our GDP, while the USA slips behind in competitiveness, this is what riles people up?
Get worried about 1 million millionaires in China. Get worried about an increasingly high tech India. Get worried about a USA with a negative savings rate. These are things to be concerned about, not the skin color of your landscaper.
This is why the USA is flailing and in danger of following England to second class country status. We worry about Gods/Guns/Gays/Illegals while the right wing fascists tax and steal us into oblivion.

Do you really think every American who pays attention in school is not threatened by illegal immigration?

Actually, to the extent it is socially acceptable, illegal labor is preferred to legal. They are in fields that require job skills and they are pushing our American born labor.

Every valid issue you raise has a place in the cue of what can/cannot be done in the present. Voting out rightwing facists is a function of time - when each comes up for reelection or when their activities can lead to a recall. Duly noted and agreed with your perspective.
Ending the war is an agenda that can be accomplished post election - and I believe will be. Americans have spoken loud and clear and have had replies from the candidates. Pick yours from the three remaining.
Outsourcing and offshoring are major issues that require renegotiating trade agreements, and none of this is likely to occur in the short-term. Americans see it and are "on it".
Our tax dollars are shoring up the economy in Mexico and helping export $30 billion annually to Latin America - money that leaves the domestic circulation never to return.
We've gone geothermal. Have you? We'll add solar panels next year as well in an effort to eventually get off the grid entirely. Our front gates are solar powered. I grow our vegetables. What do you do? I never shop Walmart and haven't been in a mall in years. I shop thrift stores and recycle. Do you? I buy older American made goods and have them reconditioned, refurbished. They fit in fine in our old house built in 1850-60 by American craftsmen who built homes to last generations.
I abhor ILLEGAL immigration, numbers of border jumpers who use, usurp jobs, disrespect America and take advantage of what AMERICANS have built. Their contributions are as slave labor to the wealthy and as blood suckers from American taxpayers. You fight whatever battle floats your boat. Some of us are fighting this battle.

America has become very factionalized and racially polarized, don't let the fact that Obama is President mask the truth. Human nature has never really changed.

"But they won't rent you an apartment around here if you're not Irish," he said. "They don't want to mix with other races."
Damn immigrants.
Of course most white people are not going to have a problem with an illegal who is white. In fact there are tons of white illegals in the tri-state area who have overstayed their visas. Some white guy from England even was offered jobs in Manhattan.
