Police say it was simply standing in the middle of the road.

A horse was hit Friday morning by three different vehicles on Highway 52 in Estill County, west of Irvine.

The collision caused a chain reaction crash that ended up claiming one woman's life.

The accident, which happened around 5:30 a.m., closed the road for hours.

Emergency workers at the scene said an SUV driving eastbound on Highway 52 toward Irvine was the first to hit the horse.

The impact threw the animal into the westbound lane, where a woman driving a Saturn hit it, knocking it back into the eastbound lane in front of a Ford Pickup, who also hit the horse.

At least two ambulances responded to the scene. A medical helicopter was initially called but couldn't fly because of the weather.

All three drivers were taken to the hospital where the woman who was driving the Saturn, 60-year-old Lois Gail Reeves, was declared dead.

Deputies closed the road, which is a main artery through Irvine, while they completed their investigation.

The horse also died in the crash.

At last check, authorities had not been able to find the owner of the horse.

the families involved will sue the heck out of the horse owner. The owner had a responsibility to keep his horses contained. No one should have to lose their life over such things. I hope they are compensated nicely and that it bankrupts the horse owner. I know it will not bring back Ms. Reeves, but still it would help drive home the meaning of accountability for neglegent livestock owners.

This is a horrible tragedy. I feel so bad for all the families especially the Reeves family. Many prayers go out to them. People really need to keep their animals fenced in. I live not far from this mess and this isn't the first time that a horse has gotten out.

and probably not the last time one gets out either. I wonder if the owner of the horse has offered his condolances to the families involved? I hope he pays for his neglegence.

what? Livestock is a part of rural life.Animals get out.Accidents happen. It's not right to be hateful about this.It could have just as easly been a deer. What if something had spooked the horse, like coyotes and it got out.People can't BABYSIT their livestock 24/7.It was dark, the road was wet.I do think that if animals are kept that close to a main highway that there needs to be barrier fences.I think the state is suppose to help with that. There a barrier fences on I75.

The horse did not come from the field on the right as you head into Irvine. It came from the left where they sometimes hold yard sales on the hill. If you look at the so called fence system they have all it is is an electrical fence! Anyone knows that is not sufficient fencing, especially for a busy road as Richmond Road! They tore down the old fence to level off a place and look like set a septic tank in and all they replaced the board fence was with electrical fence. Hell yes someone should be held responsible! I know alot of places that require an outer fence also just to prevent what happened here! So don't give us this shit about horses always finding their way out. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER AND HE/SHE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THERE IS NO FREE OUT OF JAIL CARD THIS IS THE REAL LIFE AND THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES TO ACTIONS OR IN THIS CASE LACK OF ACTION ON PUTTING UP PROPER FENCING! A LADY LOST HER LIFE. A FAMILY HAS NOW BEEN ALTERED FOREVER. BECAUSE SOMEONE CHOSE TO DO A QUICK FIX ON FENCING! THE OWNER KNOWS THIS SO WHY WOULD THEY COME FORWARD? IS IT A SURPRISE THAT NO ONE IS CLAIMING THIS HORSE?

It was an unfortunate accident and you should not look fo someone to blame. I am sue the owner did not purposely allow thw horse to escape.
