A family is mourning the loss of three people killed in a violent crash on a busy highway.
We have learned all three people who died in a car, that pulled into the path of a pickup on Highway 52 in Madison County, were all members of the same family.
An Estill County woman, her son-in-law, and 9-year-old grandson are the victims.
The boy had just completed his third grade year at an Estill Springs Elementary School, in Estill County.
Teachers were at the school Friday morning. They say the boy's death is hitting them hard.
The crash happened around 1:30 Thursday afternoon on Highway 52 in Richmond.
Police say it appears the car driven by 56-year-old Wilma Cox, of Irvine, pulled out from a side street and was struck by a truck.
Cox, along with her son-in-law, 48-year-old Gregory Hayes, and her grandson, 9-year-old Eric Cox, were killed in that crash.
Eric's mother, Deborah Griffith, and Elby Cox, Wilma's husband, were taken to UK Hospital, along with the two people from the truck.
Eric's teachers say they're in shock.
"The custodian and I were talking, and he was just walking these hallways a week ago, and it's just hard," Librarian Melisa Burkhart said.
"This summer we were making arrangements for him to attend the Youth Haven Bible Camp in Beattyville," Family Resource Teacher Kathy Bradley said. "He was so excited and couldn't wait for it to happen to go spend the week."
Friends of the family say they planned to see Eric tonight at church.
"He was supposed to be in a little program but naturally he'll be missed. It won't be the same without him," says James Woolery.
Officials with the Estill County School District say this is a big tragedy for everyone.
The principal at Estill Springs says in the three years the school has been consolidated, they've never lost a child in this manner.
Family members say the crash happened in front of a parking lot near Monty's Liquor on KY 52. They say the family was waiting to pick up Gregory Hayes who was flying in from New York and being dropped off.
"They were talking about how bad it was at that place to pull out," says Brian Anglin, a family member.
It's when they pulled out they were broadsided by a truck, killing the three.
Brian Anglin says the loss is especially hard for his cousin, who lost his son, mom, and whose wife Deborah is in the hospital.
"She keeps talking about the pain in her body can't compare to the pain and loss in her heart. She knew he was dead on impact and tried to shield him to protect him but she couldn't," says Brian Anglin.
Family members tell us they didn't have life insurance so planning three funerals will be hard, so they are hoping for a little support from the community.
Family members are still working on funeral arrangements for the three victims.
Three of the four people injured in the crash are still recovering at UK Hospital.
Deborah Griffith and Elby Cox are both in serious condition.
The driver of the truck, Roger Million, Junior, has been released.
His passenger, Billie Masters, is in fair condition.
