I personally am disgusted with are commissioners! Sheriff Lawless may have to lay off some road officers because of no funding when I know these deputies are short handed as it is working sometimes by theirselves or one other person for the whole county! These officers risk their lives for us an instead of giving them more help on the road we might have to lay off the already short staff? These people have families as well commissioners. Also close the jail down? What about all the people that work back there? I personally know two of them back there an ones my cousin an she got kids of their own an we're just gonna lay them off? I'm disgusted with Lawrence County hope people learn how to handle their own problems

It'd be great if people learned to handle their own problems, instead of robbing and stealing from others, then ending up in an overcrowded jail and whining about the conditions. Most of us have to live within our budgets, too. That's just life. Honest people deal with it, the rest whine about deserving more of other people's money...

Your opinion is worthless. OSP by law cannot handle anything but traffic related cases.

Lay their lazy asses off! I hate to see anyone that's willing to work lose their job... These guys(notice I didn't) say women...are a bunch of lazy chest pounding pieces of work. They can't solve a crime nor do I feel they try. The older men/women are good officers but the young crowd are/is worthless. Just b/c they pack a gun and a badge they get paid for a shift. Maybe, just maybe if they paid them not to set at the grand view or Per crime they solved we would see a increase in prosecution! Just my thoughts right or wrong!

Maybe the Sheriff if getting his problem with Conley out of his hair before the family has a chance to prove their case. He could have already knew who it was. I hate the idea of less police working to keep us safe but I do have a suggestion for that short coming it's call "arming yourself". Folks I will be the first to tell you that tougher times are coming. If you want to keep what you have then I extremely recommend that you take part in the Second Admendment. For those who are elderly I recommend that you reach out to those who live close to you that you trust and ask them if you can call on them if something happens that requires force to be take then call police.
People looking out for each other "strength in numbers" is a very good way to keep the criminals out.

After reading the post from Mr. Pratt in the comment section of the artical in the on-line Ironton news paper we can now see how badly this county has been ran for years. Shamfull!!!! There are many different types of criminals. These good ole boy's in lawence county are strangling this community to death and they don't care as long as they get their share or their desires met. The corruption has always been imbedded in our local government for years and until we change the whole system including Judges then it is going to continue. It is simple to solve a yearly short fall, don't over-spend your budget. Who do you guys think you are? Obama?

I'm not buying that about Sheriff Lawless. I have met him and he is a strait up man. He went beyond what other law inforcement would have and handled my situation very professionally. He was given a hand full of crap to work with and has done very well to keep us all safe.
I've lived here several times and each time I move back I'm aware that most people who know about crimes that have been committed won't pick up the phone and share what they know. The code of the thief I guess. Your a rat if you tell and a prospective victim if you don't. The choice shouldn't be that hard to make.
I'm familiar with being the victim of a B/E. The feelings of being violated comes to mind. I hope you had home insurance. I would pay more taxs for a better jail and more highly trained policemen. If they would make a jail large enough they could charge the other county for housing prisoners.

1st Jeff Lawless is the best Sheriff this county has seen, 2nd Bill Pratt did an excellent job in trying to clarify his article, 3rd how would shutting this jail down help this county, 4th what intelligent person would want to cut, law, medical or fire protection, 5th Law Co's jail is decent, it might not make the top grade marks so many crimnals want but it works, inmates are well fed, they have cable TV, working phones all day long, water to shower daily, and clothing to cover their skin should they choose-so what else should be given to an inmate to make you say, "it's a great jail". When you people start ranting about closing the jail your absolutely stupid--it cost approximately $10 a day to house our own prisoners, send them out of county and see what it will cost daily. If you think for one minute the "state" will take our theives, murders, or domestics...well think again, they won't. Not for free anyways and plan on it costing YOUR tax dollars about $40 a day per prisoner. If you think the Officers are fat and lazy then go show them how to be better "just like you". Shit while your at it run for Sheriff if your smart enough to run. Hell for that fact just plain get a job and help pay for those fat lazy asses to retire. Our good people of Lawrence County we need are Sheriff's dept, our jail, we need our EMS and hospital and we need our 911 services for quicker notification time. We need 911/ems and Sheriff's office to be together---I say put them all under Sheriff Lawless and let's see how that works because according to you keeping them apart isn't working either. 911 will not be needed if there are no deputies to respond and if you think CSI has all the answer to your BIG law enforcement intelligence then go to Hollywood and live everyone else will continue living like we do here in good ole Lawrence County by the skin of our teeth.

How much money could be saved if our good sheriff implemented a Maricopa County attitude?

It would be a mistake electing heads of ems and its a mistake electing heads of 911. Try following models of counties that work.

The jail obviously needs replaced. The only solution really is a tax levy, or getting compensation from inmates. You cannot allow other services to fail by putting them in the position of having their monies taken and utilized for the sheriff. Why would anyone think that would help anything?
