Robin Hood was very well known, although he did give back to the poor so most of the people considered him a kind of folk hero.

Some people would consider Indiana Jones a thief, since he's technically robbing tombs in a bunch of places where he's not allowed to be and bringing artifacts back to museums in the United States. With four blockbuster movies, he might be the most well known thief ever.

A lot of people would maybe say George Bush, but I think that all depends on who you talk to. If you're Democrat you probably think he's one of the biggest thieves. If you're a Republican you probably just think he's an idiot.

As far as famous stories go, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves is pretty famous, and it's been around for hundreds of years, I think.

John Dillinger was a very prolific bank robber, I'd say he's a well known thief.

Same goes for probably people like Jessie James and Billy The Kid.
