What are the summers like? I know all about the winters, but I'm hoping that the proximity of Lake Ontario allows for a good strong wind pattern that keeps the clouds from hanging over for days like it does in Syracuse.
Also, what are your favorite neighborhoods to live in in one is seeking a two to three bedroom apartment? Advice welcome! debbie.lerro@yahoo.com

Debbie,
Our temperature range is similar to that of the Boston area, due to the tempering effect that Lake Ontario has on our climate. The big difference is the amount of snow we receive. We get about 100 inches of snow during a typical season, due to the lake effect.

Spring, Summer and Fall are gorgeous here. Lake Ontario has a cooling effect in the summer, which generally extends for about 5-10 miles inland throughout the summer.

The metro is diverse culturally and geographically. Most of the area has gently rolling hills, lots of ponds, lakes and streams. The east side has a topography similar to many parts of New England - hills, gorges and lots of trees. The west side is flat to moderately hilly.

Culturally, the suburbs can tend to be a bit dissociated from the city (example - some of the negative replies you got from west-side "hicks." Some suburbanites avoid the city due to gross exaggerations of crime in the inner city. This is more typical of resident on the west side "sticks". The east side suburbs (Brighton, Pittsford, Fairport, etc.) tend to have more well-rounded and progressive people, and a more cosmopolitan environment.

The best areas of the city for a 1-2 bedroom apartment are the park Avenue area, the Corn Hill Neighborhood, and the East End.

You didnot mention Webster NY family there , Even there different sections , Homes there the area what part side in Webster Ny , ones a sight for sore eyes , The other is lovely . There is culture in Brockport NY , Its not entertain ment , corn Hill Area mixed , THey use to have festivals , I seen trash left behind by people , Homicide 10 this year , Inner city buses are flith , you better not wear white be dirty , alot of Blacks , also High welfare , That tax payer like my self have to pay . Corn Hill area town Houses wouldnot want it if free all expense paid. For that lady considering moving to New York State , she needs to come for a vist , spend a week , Corn Hill Area not far down town area , Rochester has friendly airport simular to that of Hartford , Connecticut , The inner city not well mannered , you need make a list what you are looking for Penfield is nice , Do you want a community that has built up stores etc Webster Ny be nice , B rockport , small community . But people go the extra mile with smiles and being nice . Now Victor Ny great mall there Better malls in the area , Greece Ridge fair , Medley mall poor , Irondiquiet West is better the other is near inner city , homoicide there , west Irondqioet sorry spell wrong beautiful area , Pitsford good and bad areas there , may i say here in Brockport no soup kitchen , in Pitsford theres charity there, which there shouldnot be , Do alot of work in community s , people will tell feel different , so you need to check on computer , But best drive up and check out your self once you see downtown Rochester you go the other way , what price range , what do you want in your community take all in consideration .For its like midtown mall beautiful carosual but when see on tv loked nicer then it was the midtown mall ,

Glad to hear from most of the people who don't live in Rochester and they think they know best, funny how that works, they don't live in Rochester but know the most about it. Where in Rochester would you like to move, the city, the suburbs, just because she said Rochester didn't mean inner city. If you don't like it here, move, you think the grass is greener on the other then go try it out. Move to Florida, there's no crime there...yeah right, matter of fact right outside of Orlando is Haines city, major crime, welfare and drugs.
Taxes are high here compared to many states, welfare is a federal run business, it's not run by Rochester as some have mentioned here. NY STATE is a liberal state and in need of reform, will it ever come, probably not. The business end of things are not good, Kodak is shrinking daily as is Xerox. It's too expensive to run a company in NY that's why the companies go elsewhere.

To who cares, there are federal welfare programs, maybe you should check it out before you open your mouth next time. Get educated first before you jump down someones throat, there are state and federal welfare programs. Maybe if you listened you would learn something

And not only diversity amongst races, but opinions as well.

As a lifelong resident of the city and witness to a lot of inner city blight, perhaps the worst case of all is the Midtown Plaza shopping center, plus all the non Plaza locales as well. A while back I was reminiscing with a few old acquaintances about all the restaurants and book and music stores we would patronize. A shame that all of those places we went are gone. And by 'all' I mean thus:

Midtown Plaza and all of its stores and restaurants
Sibley's
McCurdy's
Record Theatre
Radio Shack (I believe they pulled out of the plaza early this year)
Record Theatre
Neisner's Department Store (and had an old timey type lunch counter)
Restaurant Delight - family owned and home of the dollar spaghetti and meatball plate
Duke Spinner Music
Waldenbooks pulled out

...but I don't know whether the closings were a result of urban blight or urban flight.

As far as crime is concerned, unless you look in the Park Avenue and Upper Monroe areas you're fine. The other three quarters of the city are referred to as 'The Crescent', due to its shape that begins in the Beechwood section and winds around the rest of the city limits.

Weather is weather; can't do anything about that. Winter's a mess but summer's fine.

But just my opinions and observations.

And BTW, does anyone remember the huge bookstore on East Main Street? I'm drawing a blank here.

And The Crescent is not a endearing term; it refers to the high crime and drug activity. Put another way, three quarters of the city is a mess. Park Ave and Monroe fine but housing a little pricey.
