Friends of Dan Zamlen plan to return home to Minnesota's Iron Range this weekend to say goodbye to the Eveleth native whose body was pulled from the Mississippi River.

Although the poster's comments were insensitive, there is a great deal of truth in what he said. Yes, kids experiment with drugs and alcohol, and some parents see this as a necessary right of passage or a learning point for young adults to go through.

But, everybody, kids included, knows drinking can cause huge problems. Today's children, unlike me and my friends, receive this information through mandatory high school health classes, and TV ads that encourage people to drink responsibly. Moreover, there has been plenty of news coverage about college binge drinking, and stories of teens and young 20 somethings found in rivers as a result of drinking in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

It is painfully tragic that this kid's life was cut short simply because he chose to ignore the risks before him. Rather than bash the kid or make excuses for him, let's use his death as a means of reinforcing and strengthening a greater message to our college kids - alcohol is not merely a right of passage; it is a chance to do the right thing and to heed sensible warnings before tragedy occurs.

are with his family and friends. I cried like a baby saturday morning when I saw the paper. It's a crying shame and a waste of a wonderful life.

Compassion on this site isn't what it could be, that's for sure.

Sometimes it's not so much what you say as how you say it. And perhaps neither one have never lived through losing a child, adult or otherwise.

I did leave the house. And I am still alive today because I made ill-advised decisions. Not STUPID decisions.

Lots of assumptions here. Yes, he was drinking and diabetic, but until more facts are known, no one knows whether those conditions contributed to this tragic loss. Please have a little compassion for him and for the family and friends of this beloved young man.
