Hopefully you don't have asthma. Even some of the employees smoke out there. Hanging over the railing with a butt is considered 'compliance' As far as those there for meetings, perhaps 'arrogance' should be a topic of discussion one day cool, so vote with your money and go to one of the dozens of other cafes that are located just about everywhere for your convenience, there are nice ones in capitola, on the west side, in felton and ben lomond, on soquel, the east side, at the harbor.... all over town. see how easy it is to find a cafe??? go and find one you feel comfortable in rather than coming to one that you do not feel comfortable in.

This is what happened when I tried to sit on the wall next to the county building (the only shade anywhere near the park) at WAMMFest and smoke a cigarette. http://www.palmspringsbum.org/bin/WAMM-smokin... http://www.palmspringsbum.org/bin/WAMM-smokin... This video shows that they raked dirt onto the wall so no one could sit there: http://www.palmspringsbum.org/bin/WAMM-smokin... The video only appears to work in Windows Media Player. It does not work in Windows Basic nor Home Cinema nor Quicktime. I don't have Realplayer, so I don't know if the video works in Realplayer.

The Westsider wrote: <quoted text> I think smokers were less of an issue back then simply because there were many less people in Santa Cruz who smoked at the time. Additionally, the ones that did smoke generally knew their second-hand smoke bothered the rest of us and cared enough to light up elsewhere. What the hell planet are YOU from? People used to smoke EVERYWHERE in Santa Cruz. There were, count 'em, six tobacconist shops in town. One right on the mall. Cigarettes were sold everywhere. Bars, pharmacies, supermarkets, restaurants, in hospital rooms and lobbies, in movie theatres. People smoked while shopping in supermarkets. Employees smoked at their counters and desks. You have some really silly version of alternate history going on there. You might want to get your reality meters checked. lololol

Just because something occurred in the past doesn't mean its a good thing. I was referring to a time when something that occurred in the past WAS a good thing, and which I missed.

The point is that the past to which you refer is an illusion. I a native. I do not recognize the earlier Santa Cruz you are describing. Your memories are fantasies, and your comparisons demogogic histrionics and hyperbole.

You can say it for nearly any business that house outside seating or keeps their entrance doors open for circulation and cool air. They can control smoking in their domain, but any joker can stand 2-feet from the open door or outside sitting area and screw it up. It appears that you think it's OK for OTHERS to have to go elsewhere to avoid YOUR choice to smoke in public because you don't like OTHERS telling YOU where to go to smoke. Geez, that's great logic you're using.

Well, I was downtown today and saw someone smoking NOT on pacific ave. and they weren't breaking any laws and they weren't bothering anyone. See, smokers are not banned. Civility is not such a bad thing if you have at least half a brain.

RobtA wrote: Smoking is concentrated in some areas, such as in front of the Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company. It seems to me that the smokers are a mix of visitors, street life, and workers on break. The main problem is that on Pacific Avenue, the limited wind circulation blows the smoke lengthwise along the sidewalk. I would be interested to learn whether the percentage of smokers in an "enviro-veg" place such as Santa Cruz is more or less than in some random place. such a stupid policy, you know. Expending time attention money resources which merely amounts to school marm antics under some Harper Valley PTA of a City Council modus operandi. Smoking is a social vehicle and doesn't seem to resolve the death of old timers like George Burns, Bob Hope, or even Geronomo. As far as second hand goes, wonder what Erin Brokovitch has to say about it. Might even violate freedom of religion for some; you know Creationism acknowledges grass made before the sun, God delivering himself as the burning bush to Moses .. Meanwhile driving business away from the pubs and hindering reflexes that tame an otherwise hostile environment. Great tension release, it is .. useful in combat even, and here they somehow worry about safety downtown. Maybe this witch hunt for tyranny is result of economically depressed times which people can again thank to the City Council. Talk about hostile to business. And cops are to drop what they're doing to enforce like they're on some school yard recess duty. Quite undignifying, but guess that's what we can expect from the liberals!
