Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

If you get a letter from Stoneham Bank with an enclosed check saying you've been selected to improve customer service, don't believe it.

In times of economic turndowns, the scam artists
come out of the woodwork because they know people are desparate for money.

There is no free money!!! How many times do people have to fall for this stuff? I guess it's a lucrative crime because someone's always doing it. I got the one of the Nigerian e-mail things a while back, and one from someone who supposedly had a fortune for me from a long-lost relative. I told him to meet me down at the police station so we could talk.

I soooo agree with you. There is no honest free money. So the only way to be sure it is, is to work for it. I like the saying " Don't call me, I'll call you." In this case if they're contacting me in some way and I have not connection with them then it is a definite scam.

I had this happen to me about a month ago. They give you a check in the letter asking you to be a secret shopper to improve customer service. They would pay you up to $200 an hour and train at Walmart.

Needless to say it all went into the shredder.

If they would have completed the story, it would have been nice. If you go to Sentinel-Standard.com , they explain that this was connected with being a "mystery" shopper.

We heard a story on the TV news last week warning us that a certain company was scamming peoples money when they purchased TV converter boxes. I believe the story said that the company took money from customers but never delivered the product. Do you know the name of that company? or do you have a list of reputable mail order companies to purchase boxes from? Also note the converter boxes are NOT available in the approved list of stores provided by the FCC, as they are supposed to be.

Mary,
Here's a legit DTV converter box website. It was apparently featured on CBS news last week, but CBS's link was a scam and has since been fixed. No issues with scamming or spamming.
