I don't think the bar is a bad place. There typically is nothing malicious going on, especially on teen night. But keep an eye out, i think on Monday Floyd Mayweather Jr is going to announce a community center to help with this very issue.

Glad to see our cash strapped under staffed City Police Force can deploy their resources to provide security for a gang funeral. Why not hire the Highland Boys as security and let the East Ave Boys carry the coffin and then they can all just shoot each other and go down in a blaze of glory like General Thompkins...Highland forever!!!!
Is it necessary to bring up money in a family time of morning who are you to speak up on someone when you probly dont know the entire situation . And what are you doing besides running your mouth about something you have no clue about. The bottom line is that if he was in gang or not that was still an act of violence he was somebody`s brother, father, son and friend. So even if you can`t respect the man respect his family and their time of morning. And also I like to add that i think it`s ok for the Grand Rapids police department to take extra steps to make sure every one is safe and able to attend the funeral in peace cause i`m quite sure they are tax payers too and that`s just their part of their tax dollars going to work.

My thoughts are with your family.

But that's all the point that many people are trying to make: That he made mistakes that might have contributed to his way-too-young death. Being in a gang WAS a mistake, and if other young people can learn from this, then just maybe Darryl didn't die for nothing. Is that so unreasonable?

So just tell it like it is, and let others learn from Darryl's mistakes. Maybe they won't die so young. Glossing it over and painting him as a saint or martyr will do no good at all.

I bet the ones making the negative comments are a bunch of white, republican, middle class americans that happen to stand proudly behind the lie of paris hilton's reformation after her three week vacation in the county jail. no matter how anyone feels, the young man's life is over because of some foolishness. we are all guilty of making mistakes in our transition to adulthood...why are we bashing him for being a troubled teen? and the ones making the comments are ensuring a race riot and more violent behavior.

Not everyone who attended the funeral was a gang member. And I think that`s pretty dumb of you to think so.I bet you think his entire funeral was paid for by gang members,He did have a family you loved him. Or are you so stupid you belive his family was in a gang too.

Most of the statements are correct about a teenager going to the bar to have fun on summer vacation, there is nothing wrong with that. Except the small fact that he had a record and 2 small children to care for. Sounds like his mom and dad were not there for him, why would he and the mother put themselves in a position where they may end up away from their children? When you have children your fun is at home spending time with them, even if it is to watch them sleep. Children are to precious to lose over one night with a gang at a bar. Stay home.

If you dont have anything nice to say about darryl please just leave the whole thing alone. I knew darryl personally. Darryl made some mistakes when he was young OK. But that do not give anyone right to bad mouth him. He was a person. He had family, regardless what path he chose to take he still had people who care about him. If his aunt was to come to this blog she would be so hurt at the things you people are saying.
In grand rapids you are consider an adult when you turn 18 years old. I am 18 and I live on my own. Have a full time job. I dont need my parent watching my back like some people on this blog do. I am in school. I go to the club when I want some fun time for me. Is that a crime to be 18 and have fun.
Yes he did have children out of wedlock. Lots of people had children at a young age. He made a couple of mistakes. That still dont give any right to bad mouth him. He knew of his mistakes and he tried to change. He was just a young adult at the club. Why are you blaming him for his death and not blaming the shooters. If it was a non gang member who got shot will you blame that person for being at a club at the age of 18.
Darryl made some mistakes in his past. No one is perfect. He was not the perfect person to some of you out there because of what you have heard or read. Some of the stuff you hear is not always right. News reporters are going by he say she say. They dont know everything, the exact facts. So people just remember no one is saying he is a hero, a saint or anything like that he was just a trouble teen who life ending to soon. As you see he had people who care regardless if you think he was a bad guy. He was still a friend to many. We cannot judge anyone. I dont believe neither one of you people is God. So let the young man rest in peace. Regardless of your path and what you did you wouldnt what people on a blog saying anything bad about you. If you dont have respect for the dead, have respect for those who are grieving his death. Even if you think its right or wrong just remember how you will feel if it was someone you know and something like this happen to them.

You are right. I didn't know this person, so I'll keep quiet. As for you however, you should have spent a lot more time in school. Just an observation.

If you are talking about how I write. I don't think I need to be formal. I am not talking to the President nor writing a term paper. So I can express how I feel any way I want. I am in school. If you really want to know. So back off. I was just letting people on this blog know how I feel. Please don't feel the need to try to put me down. I am not on this blog for that. When people come to a place like this they are not trying to be formal. People are just trying to express their opinions. Coming to a blog is like coming to a caht room. No need to be formal.

As for me, I'm either slightly poor or lower-middle class, and have my doubts about Ms. Hilton becoming respectable. But I am white and tend to vote Republican (for lack of a better alternative). It's just that the Democrats tend to have the same apologetic, "it's not their fault, it's our fault for not taking their guns away and spending more money on them" refusal to place blame where it belongs, that a few of the posters here share. Not to mention terrible economic, social, and foreign policies. Not that the Republicans are perfect by any means, but I'll take them as the lesser of the two evils.

And speaking of gun control, it looks like they found the guy who killed Darryl, and based on the charges against him (felony weapons charges), he wasn't legally allowed to carry the gun. So... apparently gun control doesn't work. What's the difference if all guns were banned? These street thugs would still carry them. It would just be far less likely that a good guy with a gun could save the day. Yet another reason that I'm NOT a Democrat; they love to take away our guns.

Im in shock of how you all are going back nd fourth about this young man and to all of you i grew up with Darryl and although he may have been gang-related or however he was human im sorry that he didnt grow up with rich parents or grew up in a secluded residential area and that he had to suffer the street life that obviously a lot of you know nothing about you have know idea of what its like to have to choose that life and had to struggle to get what you need because you were not born with a silver spoon in your mouth you have no idea of what its like to put your pride aside in order to take care of your family, you have no idea what Darryl went through you know nothing about him so how dare you (Ron) speak on his life like he choose this life. Instead of bashing this young man that is now no longer on this world pray for his family and make sure they get stronger, reach out and pray for the youth that may be going through the same thing Darryl went through try to make a change.....

I didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth and I didn't join a gang. I didn't have everything handed to me in life, and I didn't choose to commit crimes. Darryl had choices. He had the choice to commit the crimes that gave him his record, he had the choice to join the gang, and he had the choice to leave the gang. The fact of the matter is he DID choose this life. No one forced him into this, and these decisions were not made against his own free will.

It is possible to put your pride aside, to think of someone besides yourself and not join a gang or have a criminal record. I'm a parent of 2 young kids and my husband and I make that choice every day, and we do it without breaking the law. Everyone has choices in life and we need to live with the actions and reactions to our choices. People need to stand up and take responsibility for their own actions instead of blaming everyone else for what happens to them.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I know what it's like to suddenly loose a loved one, but never to murder and not a child. It's been said that he left the gang and was trying to turn his life around. Great for him! He did take responsibility for what he was doing and obviously realized they were not good choices. It is tragic that his life was taken away before these changes could fully be made. And it's tragic that 2 babies will now grow up without their father also.

Here is a perfect example of the black mindset. Oh, I was poor. Oh, I lived in a rough neighborhood. Oh I didn’t get everything handed to me. The only thing she left out was,“Don’t blame me because I’m black.” I’m here to tell you sister, I was never, even close to being rich, grew up in the “Heights”(even went to school with a couple of the Buggs’) and was never, ever given anything. I did a lot of shi t jobs, things I thought I’d never do to support my family for the first few years. Oh and I actually got married before I started making kids. OH, I did join a gang. The US ARMY.
Everything we do in life is a choice. Good ones, bad ones. You make them, and you live with them if you make the wrong ones. Am I perfect? Hell no! But I pulled myself up out of the hood and made a life. This kid made his choices and well, here we are. Don’t even try and use the old blame game or make excuses. Very few people are actually rich and privileged. One more thing. Even rich kids, with all the opportunities given them, still end up with problems with the law.

A young man lost his life no matter what walk of life he took his life was still worth the same as yours and mine. what we need to do know is to foucs on his kids and make sure that they and our other youth dont make the mistakes that he I and most you you have made in life. IF you understand the bible, you will know that there is no sin greater than the other, sin is just sin, there is no major sin and minor sin contained in the bible.
now look at you life and tell me how can you judge D.T.

I wasn't judging him. I was pointing out that we all have choices to make. People seem to be so keen on blaming everything but the choices made. They blame it on how he was raised, they blame it on where he was raised, that he wasn't "born with a silverspoon in his mouth". I was merely pointing out that I wasn't either, but I made different choices. He DID make his own choices, no matter what those choices were. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their actions and their choices instead of trying to blame it on everyone else.
