And your city is um respectable, ya right! Kiss off!!! And I am not from wherever it says I am from, I am from Ionia.Might not be the most precious place to live, but it sure the hell beats the GR area, by 99.5%.

It's not the city DPW's fault your taxes are high, its your fault for not paying them. I think a cut in the manager's pay, could use fewer cops too, some of the DPW workers have picked up more than trash in Ionia, clean your own yards, stop living like filth. As for any other town , how often do you drive through GR and see garbage laying down the road, at least we care enough to pick it up, you all just dispose it on God's earth! As for jail, they need fresh faces down there to pick on, so why not just pay and forget going to jail.

LMAO.. the people are out of work, Jobs have left, they ran out of unemployment benifits, and now the city is going to put them in jail, thus creating a debtors prison. Can you say constitutional violation?!

Can anyone tell me what the legal definition of INCOME is? It's not even defined in the tax law!(federal or state).

It's time to put an end to the slave tax, the tax you pay for doing what is necessary to live a productive, not parasitical life - working for a living!

And its time to get the government out of our pockets.

Go ahead, put me in jail for not paying income tax. I cannot pay what I don't have and putting me in jail is NOT going to help me get a job any quicker so that I can get money to pay the tax.

Stupid politicans.. These actions are proof that politicans think we exist to serve them.. lets fire them all in November and remind them who is the real boss!

My husband and I had a tax bill of 375.00. Which we were unaware of because we only lived in Ionia about 15 months. We both worked in a different city and rented. About 5 or 6 years after living in Ionia we received a bill for our taxes. It stated that if my husband did not pay for this bill by a certain date that a warrant would be issued for his arrest. After calling and asking questions about the taxes we were able to understand them. They were paid immediately. Then 4 months later we filled out our taxes only to have that bill to be taken out of our taxes. Many attempts to the government telling them it was paid twice. Only telling me that they would find there mistake and issue a check. It has been 5 months. No check! I still have my receipt.

I also have a sister in-law that has lived in Ionia most of her adult life. Had her children taken away. Lived off welfare all of her adult life. Drinks and does drugs. Because of her income (that is what I am assuming) she has never paid Ionia taxes or been charged! I see that as being a big problem. I think the taxes being paid are not being put to good use.

I would certainly agree that Mr. Eppler and Mayor Balice are two of the biggest problems in Ionia. They firmly believe in adding any and all taxes they can, raising existing fees and creating all sorts of new fees on anything they can think of. Run these two out of town and things will be much better.
Amen!....and with a city council sporting their Obama bumper stickers theres really no hope of this city turning around.

You need to file suit against them in the court of claims down in lansing for your money back plus interest. Besides they cant charge you taxes on your income earned in a differnt city , those taxes would be owed to that city if applicable.

I live in Ionia, and I don't see it as a gangster town. I actually am offended by some of these rude comments. This article is about unpaid taxes. I have several grown children who had unpaid taxes. One ended up in jail. Yes, he got the letters informing him about his owed taxes, as did my daughter. Yes, he got the letter from the City Attorney's office, so did my daughter. Then on a Saturday afternoon in March, two police officers came to my home asking for my son. Well he don't live at home anymore. And I gave them his current address. But they agreed to let me call him and let him turn himself in. He went to the jail with what he owed. No, he couldn't just pay it, they booked him, and we had to bond him out. A court date was set. We went, when all was said and done, they kept the $1600 we paid, gave him close to $1000 in fines. So our daughter made arrangements for a payment plan. Sometimes she can only paid $10, but they except it. After all this my son changed his address because he no longer resides in the city of Ionia. He hasn't lived in the city since May 2007. So if you owe unpaid city taxes, wether it's $50 or $1000 get it paid or make a payment arrangement. They don't send you a notice of a warrant for your arrest. They just show up!
Then wish could sit down with you and show you the corruption , You would be totally shocked and amazed .

"SHUT UP"? Excuse me but EVERYBODY in this state pays money to Ionia in taxes. It seems to me there is a MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON in Ionia. Do people in Ionia think they pay for this themselves? Don't think Ionia can afford that. Normal people don't tell other people to "SHUT UP" unless they're angry, uninformed, unintelligent or a combination of all three.
Actually dont they have 6 prisons in Ionia ?

Ionia is really not a bad place...there are parts of it that are very nice, beautiful historic downtown (all tho empty), Great old homes that rival GR or Lansing and probably the most beautiful fairgrounds in MI. And yes, there are very nice people there that have no tattoos and all their teeth. Ionia is really a rough jewel, half way between Lansing and GR and if ever they could kick out the corrupt parasites and elect a city government that would stop raping the residents and businesses for all they have, Ionia may be could be the city it once was.

You idiots! They have to pay income tax because they live in the city limits. Some of you people need your butts kicked. Common sense tells me that taxes are a given in life, so pay them!!!! Its that damn easy!!!

I live in Ionia and work in Grand Rapids. For the record; Grand Rapids has an income tax. The Ionia voters overwhelmingly passed a city income tax in 1994. Ain't democracy grand? Only the prisons in Ionia keep people against their will. Everyone else is free to live wherever they want. If you don't like Ionia, don't live here. Real simple. As I understand it, the city has made repeated attempts to work with the people that owe city income tax. The warrants have been issued because these people have made no attempt to work with the city to pay what they legally owe. I hate paying taxes but I also like police protection, fire protection, paved roads, running water, etc. Momma always said that there is no free lunch in life.

Yes they can charge you taxes if you work in another City. You still live there. It depends on the tax law of where you live. I live and work in the City of Grand Rapids and have to pay more City of GR taxes then those of my co workers that only work in the City of GR.

My city government has been doing this for years. They also issue warrants for failure to file, even if they owe you.

I guess they want people to be responsible citizens or some crap.

Anyway, I always file promptly and send it registered mail, return receipt requested. They will NEVER be able to say they didn't get my return.

I started doing this about 9 years ago when an aquaintence was arrested and jailed for not filing his $7.00 (SEVEN DOLLAR)tax return.

$7.00 ended up costing him $107.00.

Most companies in US avoid federal income taxes

Associated Press - August 13, 2008 10:03 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP)- A congressional report shows that most American corporations -- about two-thirds -- paid no federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005.

That adds up to about 1.2 million businesses.

The Government Accountability Office study also shows a high number -- 38,000, or about 68%-- of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. dodged corporate taxes over the same period.

Collectively, those companies reported trillions of dollars in sales.

The report also found that large U.S. corporations with at least $250 million in assets or 50 million in receipts, didn't pay corporate taxes.

The GAO didn't look into why corporations weren't paying federal income or corporate taxes. It also did not identify any corporations by name. The study mentioned that companies may escape paying taxes due to tax credits or operating losses.

Lawmakers have been complaining about companies that abuse tax loopholes. As one senator puts it, "It's time for the big corporations to pay their fair share."

they should be worrying more about these places.

What a dumb comment. The comment assumes that you are getting something that is worth paying for...or that you haven't already paid for the lunch.

Roads, police protection, schools, etc. These are supposed to be paid for by residents and businesses in the form of property tax. Dipping into the tax base again for a different form of tax tells me that the city can't control their spending.

I know where I live, my property taxes more than pay my fair share of community services. As such, I don't have to pay an additional income tax to my local government.

Grand Rapids city government is far from being a role model. The volume of people on city payroll in GR is staggering when you consider how many people should be required to provide what is expected from a local government.
