The City should have to cut their budget if it is that bad. 10K should be easy to cut. Start with salaries....

I agree that it is ridiculous that they are arresting people for not paying their city taxes. However, I do not agree that Ionia is a "trash city". Their is a lot of good in Ionia. Unfortunately, like many smaller towns, the government has a few people on power trips taking advantage of their positions. But it is a safe and pleasant community.Maybe

How much $$ is the city willing to spend to chase down 10K worth of back taxes?
35 people served, hourly rate of the deputies for the project, court time, attorneys, cost of 3 squares and a cot at the graybar hotel for how long?
All to try and get 10K worth of back taxes, from people who can't afford a pot to urinate in, or a window to throw it out of.
Get a clue Ionia.
I was about to say the same thing. And you hit it right on the nail! Add up all these costs, then the taxpayer will see how hard they're getting bent over.

TRASH CITY!!! We house all the GR criminals in our 5 prisons. If you want to see TRASH, take your life into your own hands and drive through GR some night. Not a day goes by when someone shoots someone over there. And make sure you travel down Division St... the scenery is beautiful, if you want to catch a disease.
OMG, way to funny! Sad thing is its true. We got so mant criminals here in GR that its become a joke.

This is a ridiculous waste of time and money. Ionia county officials apparently do not have enough to do between handling the stabbings, shootings, and hit-and-run accidents that have been making headlines lately. Tax evaders do not deserve a free ride by any means. However, the county initiates foreclosure proceedings on properties with unpaid taxes after two calendar years anyway; at that point, the property goes up for auction and the takings are applied to the outstanding assessment. What in the world is throwing someone in jail going to accomplish?
Get your facts straight. The stabbing and hit and run and stabbing took place in Ionia COUNTY, not in the city of Ionia. And what shooting are you talking about??? And at least Ionia doesn't see the random violence that GR and Lansing do!

What in the heck is left to tax. I don't work in Ionia, but I think we pay more of our income to various taxations in this country than we take home.TAX< TAX< TAX the goods I buy,Tax the wages I earn, tax the property I own, tax the services I use federal, state, county, city. Government is taxing us to death!
Actually if you look across the rest of the world we are one of the lowest taxed countries in the world. Now... I'm not saying I'm not happy when I pay taxes....but we could have it worse.

Not when you combined all taxes we pay from the time we wake up in the morning. New York taxes are highest and they pay more than Europe.

Next news headline will be "Early Release of Prisoners Ionia. Room Needed for City Tax Evaders" Just another way to waste tax payer money. Instead of jail time, maybe just garnish wages.
You are SOOOOOOOOOO very true!!! I dont know how many times Ionia just writes criminals tickets and lets them go because of the overcrowding at their jail!!!!! I have heard this first hand from many Ionia officers.

OMG MMMM get your facts straight! Does the city of Ionia have a jail that can house these people? What if Portland pursued tax offenders with a warrant….where would they be housed? This will automatically fall into the jurisdiction of county officials. Everything from writing and issuing the warrants to the conditions of their bail requirements will be handled through county officials. Get off your soap box, I live in Ionia county too. Comparing the crime that happens here versus Grand Rapids or Lansing is like comparing apples to oranges. Crime happens everywhere!!

What does it cost to house a person in the city jail per day? Who pays to house this criminal tax evader??? The tax payers of Ionia County or the tax evader who couldn't afford to pay the taxes he already owes? Nobody wins here.
Those people probably do not have the resources to pay all the additional fees of being arrested never mind the taxes.

If it weren't for the fiscal mismanagement that runs rampant in the City of Ionia, there wouldn't even be a need for a city income tax, 98% of the states cities operate w/o a city tax, so I think Ionia could also. Forget about the fancy street lights, benches on every corner, water fountains, and flower beds spend OUR money more responsibly

Yeah, don't try to make the city attractive so people will want to come to the downtown area. Let them take their money "up on the hill". Give it to the "big box" places. I do notice a lot being spent on "prettys" in Greenville too..........hmnnn.

At least it is only on division street and not on every street in Ionia is the bearded lady still working at the downtown gas station?

Who pays? The inmate is charged $35.00 a day for in their incarceration by the county jail it’s a win win for the county. It's a good thing nobody is going after the Sheriff for tax evasion, because there would nobody to lock up the good citizens of Ionia.

They are referring to the City of Ionia, not Ionia County.
