I guess you have room in your jail when you can do this. Everyone has to pay their fair share. Unless you have a genuine reason or hardship.

What in the heck is left to tax. I don't work in Ionia, but I think we pay more of our income to various taxations in this country than we take home.TAX< TAX< TAX the goods I buy,Tax the wages I earn, tax the property I own, tax the services I use federal, state, county, city. Government is taxing us to death!

I thought we had outlawed "debtor's prisons" in this country.

Not when you owe the City!

Note that the IRS and the Michigan Treasury can't jail you for not paying. They require criminal evasion.

Ionia is the most crooked sheriff dept in the nation!! I will never spend a penny of my money in that community, total creeps. I bet that prosecutor was more than happy to get those warrants issued. Years ago my wife was falsely arrested for operating under the influence, all tests were negative, breath, blood and urine, she was fired from her job while she was in jail, never once did we get an apology, not once, total creeps, may they all rot!!

Next news headline will be "Early Release of Prisoners Ionia. Room Needed for City Tax Evaders" Just another way to waste tax payer money. Instead of jail time, maybe just garnish wages.

You can blame the entrenched Democrat city government of Ionia.....with an empty downtown and no businesses to steal from, they need to start shaking down the citizens....

As a resident, I would move, if only there wasn't eight other empty houses on the street for sale...

TRASH CITY!!! We house all the GR criminals in our 5 prisons. If you want to see TRASH, take your life into your own hands and drive through GR some night. Not a day goes by when someone shoots someone over there. And make sure you travel down Division St... the scenery is beautiful, if you want to catch a disease.

I think this is the wise thing to do because now the city is spending money they don't have. Why don't they just garnish wages. They would at least get something if they could. What can a person pay staying in jail. Maybe they then can raise my taxes for there decisions of how to spend my money.

What does it cost to house a person in the city jail per day? Who pays to house this criminal tax evader??? The tax payers of Ionia County or the tax evader who couldn't afford to pay the taxes he already owes? Nobody wins here.

How much $$ is the city willing to spend to chase down 10K worth of back taxes?

35 people served, hourly rate of the deputies for the project, court time, attorneys, cost of 3 squares and a cot at the graybar hotel for how long?

All to try and get 10K worth of back taxes, from people who can't afford a pot to urinate in, or a window to throw it out of.

Get a clue Ionia.

This is a ridiculous waste of time and money. Ionia county officials apparently do not have enough to do between handling the stabbings, shootings, and hit-and-run accidents that have been making headlines lately. Tax evaders do not deserve a free ride by any means. However, the county initiates foreclosure proceedings on properties with unpaid taxes after two calendar years anyway; at that point, the property goes up for auction and the takings are applied to the outstanding assessment. What in the world is throwing someone in jail going to accomplish?
