Hi. I am writing a book that needs to be set in a very cold place in the U.S. and close to an international border. After googling some places, I decided that the International Falls area seemed perfect. The only problem is that I have never really been farther north than Kentucky, and I am not planning a traveling trip anytime soon. Any info that anyone could give me about these areas would be very beneficial. Thanks alot.

My wife and I moved from Mpls to Int'l Falls in June 2008. There is some beautiful nature there, very little culture. My wife was a psy., loved her job. I'm a musician and found a few compatible souls, although compared to Mpls, it was a desert. Most of the guys like to fix or build things, catch or kill them. If you like fishing, hunting, ATVs, snowmobiles, this is definitely the place for you. If you don't, think twice. Winter is VERY long. Commences in mid October, doesn't completely release its grasp till about May 1st - seriously! Some gorgeous summer weather when it's not raining. Not excessively hot very often. We loved cruising Rainy Lake with a friend on her pontoon boat. The NACHO platters and Long Island Teas at the Sha Sha resort were always very good. Walleye is excellent most places, they catch it fresh there. We enjoyed a great church in Canada, very small but the pastor was exceptional.(Fort Frances Covenant) Good luck writing your book. Living in Ranier should work, quiet, few distractions. Best of luck.
