<quoted text>so can any dog..no matter what breed..and it happens with other breeds...ask any vet or dog expert....they will tell you how intelligent a pitbull is..the problem is because of their strength, if they do bite, of course it will be real bad. im sorry for your brother in law..but please dont think its just the breed...the woman in england who had to have a face transplant several years ago..her dog ripped her face off...her dog was a black lab...a lontime family pet...i hope your brother recovered as well.
The biggest problem with pits is their reputation. I have been bitten by a pit bull but I was in their yard and she just had puppies. The dog was not viscous but defending her territory and owner much like the German Shepherds I had growing up would do. Once the owner called the dog it was friendly. The biggest problem across the board is irresponsible dog owners. My dog rarely if ever gets loose from the yard. If it finds a damaged section of fence it can get through, I fix it immediately. Its a shame the number of animals that are put down every year because people will not spay or neuter their animals and there are hundreds of unwanted animals born. Nothing aggravates me more than driving by the pound on Mc Duff and hear the animals bark and wail knowing they will be put to sleep because they are unwanted. If animal owners were more responsible it would solve so many issues. There would be no dogs running loose to attack people and we wouldn't have to put millions into euthanizing animals each year. While Pits are not a breed that I like, to prevent someone from having one is not something because I don't like them is not something we have a right to do. Preventing people from owning dogs because the people are irresponsible pet owners is something we should be doing.

If Pit Bulls were intelligent, they wouldn't bite their owners or worse, other people.
Problem is, they do most of the biting most of the time.

william..i have always offered to met anyone who supports a pibull ban or ban of any breed for that matter to meet my dogs...but no one has ever taken me up on the offer...i used to be leery of the breed myself until i spent quite some time with one when my ex gf and her family had a pit..the first time i met the dog, she "snarled" at me..or so i thought..i was scared to death..they told me to tell her what a pretty smile she had..i did, her tail went to wagging and she jumped in my lap and rolled over for a belly rub..she wasnt snarling..they taught her how to "smile"...my gf had a newborn...she would lay her on the floor and the pit would get on the floor beside her and lay as flat as possible next to her and just watch the baby with the sweetest look in her eyes...if the baby wimpered, she would jump up and run to one of the adults crying and whining wanting someone to follow her to the baby....it breaks my heart that irresponsible owners who teach their dogs to be agressive or to be fighters have ruined the name of the breed. the breed is a very loving breed and has had many famous owners...including some american hero's and icons...but idiots have used the breeds loyalty and protective nature for negative gains....by the way, do you think american staffordshire terriers should be banned?

Scott1 sorry...you deserve a better answer than the one I wrote above.
I'm "really" not a jump up and down, ban the Pit Bull type of guy.
True, I have not been around very many Pit Bulls in my life. I have been around "one Pit" somewhat recently, however and I will say it is exactly as you say. Sweet dog..at least for now. I actually have more problems with the owner and the person owning a Pit Bull...and nothing else is a problem for me.
I wish that I could get more into this but I can't.
It has caused a few problems for me through a very extended family and my immediate concern for children.
I am very much aware of what a Pit Bull can do to a child and an adult, Pit owner or not. I don't need to own one to understand.
Scott1, you don't need to own a gun or been around a gun, to understand the damage they can do.
My point has "always" been this:
Why can't so called "responsible" people just simply own another breed? A breed that has less propensity to turn on you or less probability to kill you and one of your children?
You and others, use small dogs quite often as examples that all dogs can bite...well that's a gimme. But is absolutely is NOT a point.
Again, I have always stated and I believe that if you would call your homeowners insurance agent and discuss the possibility of you buying a Pit Bull...they will most certainly explain to you all the reasons why that might not be a good idea...especially if you want to keep your policy in good standing.
If it takes banning Pit Bulls to protect children then, I would vote yes.
However, I'm not going to stand on a street corner with an anti-Pit Bull sign.
I could write more but I have to a T-Ball game.

im glad your experience didnt sour you to the entire breed...i was bit by our dauchund when i was younger after she had her pups and i decided it would be a good idea to pick one up...she tore into me! all 8 pounds of her! you are right..it all goes back to the owner...my pit hit puberty and he decided to jump our fence...i immediately put him on a runner and built a 6 foot privacy fence with a concrete footer to make sure he couldnt get out...a roaming dog is a danger to people, other dogs and are an accident waiting to happen to themselves as well. like you said, stupid people get pits right now like william said, for their ego, to look tough....and they give the breed a bad name....thanks for understanding how us responsible pit owners feel about this....

my insurance company has no problem with my pit or my am staff..thank you for admitting it is most of the time the owner..heres the problem..ill expound on what you said...for a hundred years pits have been wonderful family dogs..helen keller owned a pitbull all of her life..teddy roosevelt had pits..a pitbull was the most decorated dog in ww II....the little rascals dog petey, was a pitbull....when they banned bull baiting, pits were bred more for temperment than for ferocity....but then white tash, low life mexicans and thug black people decided that because of their fierce loyalty to their owners and the fact they are fearless, they went back to breeding a lot of them for fighting again...this has tainted the reputation of the breed...bad pits come from bad owners as well as irresponsible breeding where the breeder looks for meanness instead of loyalty and for size instead of proper temperment...they do this by inbreeding and by watching their puppies close to see if any show any signs of being mean as a small puppy..they then breed that line, most of the time, within the bloodline and it ends up making unstable dogs....i didnt worry about size when i bought kane. i didnt care if he was big and stocky with a huge head...i went for temperment in his family....like i said, my female am staff is bigger than he is....and i dont plan on ever breeding him as well..im not a dog breeder, i am a dog owner....i stil lsay if you ever want to meet one of the sweetest dogs you will find, you are more than welcome to meet both of mine..it might not change your mind about the breed, but maybe it would at least soften your opinion about the breed in genera.

I still think the problem with Pit Bulls is the "breed" itself...that's the #1 issue to me.
Then add to the ownership list that you mentioned above and it makes it worse.
I'm not into taking chances with kids if you don't reasonably have too.
Yes, putting them in an automobile, as an example, is not real safe but it is reasonable.
Buying a Pit Bull and saying to your children "what a cute puppy", it's yours!
That's not reasonable to me.

I still don't see why you think the media is motivated to "eliminate" part of this story.
That would mean that First Coast News, WJXT tv4, the Fox station, the CBS affiliate, The Florida Times Union, all the Orange Park newspapers, as many as 30 plus radio stations and any other surrounding media outlet would "ALL" have to conspire to hold back this information from the public.
This is one WILD stretch of the imagination.
I really don't think you know anything of which you speak..... Have you EVER heard of AP???? Do you know what a pool reporter is.... All it takes is for one media reporter to write a story and the rest of the media buys the right to run the story....

Why would you ask me two (2) questions, seeking knowledge, with "your" #176 post above?
You don't have to look to me for knowledge but please look to someone... someplace as soon as you can. or ask for backup.
