Hmmm

I was reading in the Mountain Citizen about how the BOE held a closed meeting. The agenda was to push another 4 year contract through for Mark Blackburn after his expires next June. This was a sly way for Blackburn to try to get a new contract seeing how the meeting for superintendent is suppose to be open for the public. I'm glad that one member has enough guts to stand up and vote no and revealing that she felt pressured to vote yes. She voted no because election for 3 board members happens in November and she's suggesting the contract meeting shouldn't happen until after January, when the new members take office. It's bad enough that this meeting violated the open records law and I'm hoping the next one will be open to the public. I'm sure a lot of parents would like to voice their opinions before Mark Blackburn is given another 4 year contract considering he seems to have a problem budgeting money resulting in 21 teachers being laid off.

Fact of law....if the Board members will not be in office when his contracts expires.. they can not vote on a new one....I know for sure this is true...you can vote for a man's contract unless you will be in office when it starts....if this contract happens..call the Office of accountability in Frankfort or the attorney General's office.. they can do what they wanty to.. there are rules to keep this type of stuff from happening.. The Board memebr who voted no did the right thing..... Gary Ball knows these rules well at the citizen call and ask him about them....

I heard all the board members got new I-Phones at more than $600 each. How can they afford such items when teachers are being laid off? Vote them out of office and get people in who care for our children and not themselves.

You mean these people don't get paid enough to buy their own cell phones? Right there is the reason that Martin County Board of Education is 600K in the hole and had to lay off teachers. Education is simply not important, have you seen the test score from the last few years? They are a joke. Instead of buying books and actually teaching money is being squandered on Ipads and Imacs. Imacs costs 2-3 times more than Dell or HP products and you can get android tablets at Wal-mart for $100 or $200 for a good one and it was stupid to spend $500-$800 on an Ipad. These kids are not prepared for the real world, when they go to college they are not going to be playing with Ipads but they are going to be reading books and listening to lectures.

Everybody knows they dont need no books or anything in the mines. If the kids get educated, they would find jobs other than the mines. Most around here don't want that.

Well the mines are closing down, that's no longer going to be an option. It's either an education or working at minimum wage job.

Board members never got any type of phone period. Most of the Mac computers are put there at no cost to the school system. The school system did not end the year $600 thousand in the hole. We ended with a positive balance. The reason for the lay off is that the state and Federal gov. are not funding the school system like they are suppose to. You can't believe everything that is printed in the paper.

As much as I like to blame the federal government too, you need to become educated. All school systems majority of funding comes at the local level. Someone somewhere is wasting money.

What about the secret meeting, and trying to give Blackburn a contract that has never been given before. Who is he paying off on the board? Should the board members give Blackburn such a contract, the law suits will fly. The board has done nothing but WASTE the county's money.

Please tell me this... Why did the board of education need to rent/lease that expensive office in town? I don't see a thing wrong with the one that was used before. Couldn't that extra spending have been used for the purpose of having a school in the first place OUR KIDS? Please tell us the reason.

One board member has taken a stand against the system hopefully there will be a chain reaction. If you have any information that can be investigated maybe you should get in touch with the board member that voted no. On behalf of our children, please share this information with someone that can point you in the right direction. Good Luck!!

This is incorrect. She isn't that type of person. When was there another meeting?

Not only did they move, but paid more than market cost for the space they got. The county built a building which was suppose to make money, yet the county is over paying for the space. This is a classic case of robbing Peter to pay off Paul. The tax payers are the ones left with the check, while getting nothing in return. Can't help but wonder if the board members were singing the song "Moving on Up" from the classic Jefferson's TV show, as they were heading for the new offices. Still in the end it is only the public to blame, as they and they alone have voted for the board members, and allowed this to go on. If you really don't like what is going on, say so with your votes.

They are no way that Kissinger was that far off. You could have tried and not been off by over $600,000. Do they really think people are that dumb to believe that nothing is going on at the BOE?
ONE SIDED PAPER

How can you trust anything the paper says? why do i say that? because it covers up for its pals. do i have an example? sure do. leo marcum, an inez lawyer pal of theirs, a prosecuting attorney at one time, was disbarred last years. big story in paper? no. not a word. sued by IRS and got a $1.3 million judgment for not filing and not paying taxes. Big story? not a single word. then, he was indicted by state of kentucky for not filing and not paying for 6 years. surely that was a big story. wrong. again, not a word. pleaded guilty to 6 3-years sentences and is now in jail for not filing and not paying. you missed this big story, you are thinking. again, wrong. NOT ONE WORD ABOUT ANY OF THAT IN MTN CITIZEN, although in other local papers and in state papers.SO,HOW CAN YOU TRUST ANYTHING THIS PAPER SAYS ABOUT MARK BLACKBURN OR THE BOE?
