Me and my wife just visited Nuevo Progreso about 4 months ago and we loved it. We purchased some fine items and dined like kings at a very modest price, and the food was great and plentiful. Prospective travelers need to understand that not all border towns are unsafe. If you go looking for trouble it will find you even in the major U.S. cities. Crime in Mexico is just about as bad as U.S. crime, but that does not usually make for good headline news since it has cultured into the norm for the media. Here is some advice, instead of listening to the media why not talk to some one who has recently been there and make a sound judgement. I am sure some of you would not travel to Detroit or Flint, Michigan based on bad media coverage.
Hi you wonderful people. I could not have said it any better. I too have been to Nuevo Progresso several times most recently and will go again this weekend. Also Tijuana, where I've been in August for 2 weeks is wonderful. If we're getting away from the border into town it's just beautiful. Soooooooo safe.

i absolutly love Nuevo Progresso. I stay at Las Flores Inn on Mexico side. Go in, ask for Chewy(owner) or Jerry, they will take excellent care of you.Johannna, lovely lady @ front desk. Have lunch/dinner at Red Snapper. Excellent food as well as the hotel restaurant. Tell Chewy & Dehlia Sherree sent ya. The town is safe but as anywhere whether here in the states or abroad, it is only as you make it. i don't party, etc. and have a blast. Love to shop, been staying there since 1995. No problems. For dental work, Bonoficia Hernandez, ask for Felix who speaks very fluent english and Omar(dentist) will take good care of you. Eat, drink and stay in Mexico. With my entire family.Looking forward to my next trip in a few days and just returned from there. US $ is welcome but haggle, don't pay what vendors 1st ask for merchandise. They will come down off of price to make a sale and keep you as a customer when you return on your next trip.
You're absolutly right. I went to Progresso last weekend to see my Dentist. The streets are safe (and I stroll through the back streets of the main stream) I too stay at the Hotel Las Flores, which is very very nice. The rooms/bathrooms are grand and the people are very friendly. Didn't check out the Red Snapper yet because I usually eat in the streets from the little vendors. Food is safe or has anybody seen a local "drop dead while eating???

Winter Texans I am a 60 year ole gal from Germany living in Corpus. Go back to Progresso. Don't bee afraid of all this negative propaganda. Progresso is still great, nothing to worry about. Go back there and enjoy. You do love it anyway.

Renker: Thank God you're in Washington, DC. Let's hope you don't work for the Government. I'd hate to think my taxpayer dollars are going to pay the salary of someone like you (or your retirement). People like you eat at Taco Bell and think its great food, you hire illegal aliens to dig your ditches and cut your yard for $2/hr. and you buy Mexican tequila for your Margaritas. You're the kind of guy who hires a mexican maid to clean your toilet and thinks all of that is ok. You want to kill them all. Who's gonna do all that for you then??? Oh...I forgot, you're 73 years old...sure wouldn't wanna be you when you kick the bucket....Hell for you would be reborn as a Mexican....better watch out....
Renker: Adolf Hitler would have been proud of you. You got a German name and I am ashamed of you. Do you have any friends??? People like you really must hate live . The Nazis in America love you. They always look out for new members, but of course, you might be a member already acording to your tong. Say - why did you leave Germany????

Dear Winter Texans.
Don't be afraid. There . The only thing that can be out of control is the booze. I am in Progresso every month. I even drive my car into progresso. If you go just one street parallel to the right of the main street, there are parking lots for $2 all day only. It's not so dusty as the main street.
And I even walk in the back streets and eat from little vendors just to take in the way of life of the people there. People are very friendly and nobody ever is going to pescer you. And in the main street - if you don't like to buy anything just say "NO GRACIAS" shake your head and move on. They'll try but that's the fun of it. The know and so should you. We are the guest - this is their country. Everybody is just trying to make a living.

Amazing.(Lock'n'Load) Who are you to judge a whole nation full of the most wonderful people I have ever met. People like you are the ones that are giving a bad reputation to the USA which already is the most disliked "civilized" country in the western hemisphere. Lock your self up and stay where you're at. Don't you dare to visit other countries and voice your ill opinion.
It allways amazes me that people like him are still able to walk around without being knocked over and out.

Odds are the thieves were Mexican. Never the less, at the very least you can trust the police in the U.S. unlike Mexico where the police are bigger thieves than the criminals or working for the bad guys or incompetent as they come.

Who would want to go,to a "shit-hole" mexican town with nothing but dentist offices, all over the place, little kids running up to you with thier hands out, asking for a handout.

The Drug Cartels, did us a favor by turning the streets into a battlefield,so they know, that will keep us on the other side.

Just don't go to Mexico for a year or two. Let the gov't get rid of all the drug dealers. Once they are in charge of the drugs. Everything will be back to normal.

Don't go to Mexico. Don't spend money there. Don't send money either.

WE ARE AMERICAN POWER AND WE FIGHT AND WIN THE FIGHT. If he is mexican, cut him up and feed him to the fish in the gulf of mexico homey. Even though I am 73, I can still whip ass when dealing with the crummy mexicans. My daughter is a boxer and she can whip ass well and my other daughter works for the Montgomery County Police in the Wheaton/Glenmont area and that is good. Take all the mexicans, cut them with a saw, steal their money and feed the dead mexicans to the fish in the sea. Hey! The gulf of mexico is just a tad away homey. Even though I am retired and living in a senior citizens home, I can protect the new president and I ain't too old to whip the Mexican's **** and Ann Coulter is a **** and she needs to step down. Our Montgomery County Police and detectives living here in Leisure World here in Silver Spring, Maryland want to have our young college students go to Mexico to clean out their money supplies to use for our education programs. The circuit judges here in the Montgomery Judicial Center in Rockville say that the Mexicans are the ones that commit crimes on our soil so there is a coalition to get revenge on the Mexican cartel for their crimes. We plan to fight the Mexicans and rob them of their cash and weapons to bring justice on them. Ann Coulter may be pretty but my wife is a hell alot pretty than her. Ann Coulter is a sleasy tramp. You dig? Good!

First let me say that we were in Nuevo Progreso during the incident. NO Americans were injured or killed. The merchants made sure that everyone in their town was secured in some fashion within their walls. This was an unfortunate and dangerous incident between the Mexican Army and, as we were informed, members of the drug cartel Zetas Gang. We have lived in this area for 20 years and Nuevo Progreso was the last "safe" area to cross into Mexico and enjoy your day. Regardless of the comments made by less than intelligent people, the only drugs being brought across from the pharmacies are LEGAL medications that cannot be purchased for reasonable prices in the USA. This is a case of survival for many seniors who are now deciding between medications and food. The Dentists are professional and also serve mostly seniors who cannot pay the prices the thieves in our dental offices are charging. The medical and dental professions on the USA side are doing nothing short of financial rape to these seniors who are now in declining financial situations. Please do not be so judgemental if you have not walked in their shoes. This is a horrible situation for that tiny tourist town. I respect the merchants there for staying in their country and trying their best to eek out an honest days wage. The scum that escapes to the US for crime have absolutely nothing to do with the hard working honest people there. It's like any other country, it's the ones who are not willing to change things on their own turf who want to cause harm to us. So grow up, understand why some must go to these bordertowns and if you don't want to go ~ stay home. Unfortunately, most of us who lived through yesterday's experience will probably also choose the latter. Details are leaking slowly as to the number of dead, but there have been NO reports of Americans being involved.

Lady,

You were only safe and kept safe as there were not targets of interest where you were at. Don't fool yourself. Your life and whoever else was in the shop with you are worth nothing to the gangs or the Mexican government. If there were a target that needed cleaning within the vicinity of the shop that you were in or in the shop that you were in. You would not be telling your story today.

Don't ever assume that the Mexican gov't is thinking about your safety. They don't care about the safety of their own citizens, much less the safety of Americans.

No one is arguing that medicine and medical care are much less expensive across the border. At this moment in time, you are much better off simply staying away.

You want the mexican gov't to really take your safety seriously? Don't spend money in Mexico. Don't visit Mexico. Don't send money there.

Let them know that you value your life and that saving a few bucks by going across the border is not worth it.

You have a voice. It's in your pocket. Let them know that we are serious.

I love going to Mexico as much as the next guy, but I am staying away for a while and keeping my money in the USA.
