Watch telling people to drink straight out of the hot water tank. Old ones might have rusted metal, etc.

No one is going to drink water straight out of the water heater. If they do drain it, it would not be rust, but harmless boiler scale from the hard water that Independence has. That will settle out.

Water heaters don't rust from the inside as most are lined with something that won't rust. Stainless steel.

Even if there was rust, it would settle out. In an emergency, who cares... just don't waste it.

Many citizens of Independence will awake to find they have no water, or very low water pressure. Early this morning a major water leak was discovered. The City Crews are working to repair the broken line and restore services as soon as possible. Please be bear with us while the repairs are under way.
This idea that layers upon layers of the Internet and that everyone has a "social media" account is stupid. The city pays someone to maintain a website. Honestly, not everyone likes this Facebook crap. Nor do they want to post their every move as seems to be the norm now days. People who use Facebook and this Twitter crap need to realize that they are opening themselves up for all sorts of possible problems. There was a city emergency this morning and people were scrambling for information. The only clues according to early postings was from the school district website, not social media. I am sorry for my rant here, it is just frustrating that the city pays for a web site, someone to maintain it and the information people need is on the school website and of all places fhe IPD "Facebook." When there is an emergency such as a utility outage post the information on the web sites we pay for. Or a better thought, Topix! That was literally where I got some good reliable information this morning. Thanks to those who posted good info!!

Neither I or my elderly relatives are people into all that media crap so I never vist Facebook or Twitter. My elderly relative don't even OWN computers.

If the city wants to put out the word on an emergency so a lot of citizens will see it quickly, WHY DOESN'T IT USE IT'S CABLE CHANNEL? Maybe if it did that, people would start automatically checking that channel when something was wrong. What's more important running crap on it's cable channel that's been there for almost a year or running information such as this?

What this shows me is that MICKY WEBB has not established any decent emergency procedures for getting a widespread news flash for things like this out to the masses, EVEN THOUGH we are paying COWAN out our noses to be emergency director. Answer this WEBB AND COWAN: How would you have fought another fire if the city had no water? What were your contingency plans? Buying bottled water at Wal-Mart and throwing it on the second fire?

Also, was this break because the line was old or was it new line that broke because it was improperly designed or installed? If it was an old line, maybe we should have spent money to replace it instead of spending a ton of money to cram EMS and everyone else into city hall. If it was a new line with something wrong with it, we shouldn't have to pay for it. We've had enough of paying fancy consultants twice for the same job because they did it wrong in the first place.

One day the poor management of this place is going to result in a real, big tragedy.Maybe it's time to get someone to run Indy who wants to do something besides spend money on a bunch of crap. Commissioners you three have let us down in every way possible.

My water pipes started shaking very hard and making this really loud sound about 6 months ago. I called my dad and he said it was hammer pipes and it would go away. The same thing happened about 4 more times over the next couple of months and then stopped. I was glad because when the pipes shook they shook so hard I thought they might come apart. They said this water leak had something to do with a water hammer that I think is the same thing I had. Does anyone know anything about what causes this? Could it break my pipes if it shook real hard again? Thanks.

The hammering is caused by air getting into the water lines. The pipes do shake hard, but will not come apart.

This whole ordeal did bring up some very interesting thoughts, or fears rather. As mentioned above, I checked the "city of independence" website multiple times, after calling a few friends and confirming that the issue wasnt just confined to my home or area. There was nothing posted under alerts since June 2010. This should be the first place a notice is posted. then through the emergency broadcast system, either via the loudspeaker/tornado/public announcement system (which is usually pretty hard to understand, but at least it would have told us SOMETHING was going on city wide) or through the cable. Also as touched on above, did our city officials have a plan for the event another fire broke out? I'm sure they have came up with something to cover their butts by now, but yesterday could have been a REALLLY bad day if there had been any other fire, without a doubt. I'm willing to bet the rural fire trucks were out helping with the original fire. No water for a few hours no big deal, we survived, and didn't panic. My major fear is the piss poor city management and notification process. Yes, it is up on page now, and it was very nice of the schools to have someone outside telling us no school, but my point is why did it take so long to get the word out to the public? Yes, it was only an hour or two, but in the event of a major disaster or upcoming threat, an hour notice cab potentially save many lives! Someone is being paid to maintain and update our city's page, probably more $ daily than most of us make in a month! This should be viewed as an opportunity for improvement, to say the least!

The ideas of posting on city's website and even Topix are good ideas but many people don't have ready access to computers. A lot of cities designate one radio station that will report urgent news on in the case of an emergency. Since most people have radios, the city could chose a station, advertise that station on its TV channel, and do whatever else to get the word out where people should turn in the event of an emergency. The next time something like this happens people will know exactly where to turn for info.

I think the term being used for this type city performance is Ready, Fire, Aim. Micky is one of those managers that doesn't think ahead. He waits until something happens and then reacts to it. The commissioners think he's doing a great job but the rest of us think we'd like to have a manager who's thought and prepared ahead which would be in our best interest and better protect us.
The Director of Public Safety position is a joke that's worthless. The only thing it does is give Micky Webb and extra pair of spying eyes for his personal use. If he wants that service he should pay for it out of his own pocket or maybe the commissioners could give him a $5,000 annual allowance to help him pay for it.

You all know it was all over the radio? That is more primitive for you not so technologically advanced. If you don't have a computer and are complaining that there is no emergency notification, you are wrong. In the event of a real emergency, you will know via sirens, tv, radio and people running down the streets with their skin on fire.

You just want to complain and this is what you have chosen today.

I tried different radio stations and never did hear an announcement. What station was it on so I'll know where to tune the next time?
