McBride's cartoon hit the nail on the head. It's nuts to throw $50000 in those potholes one day and tear them out the next. Some of us knew Fred Meier would spend money like a fool so this is only round 1. Thanks all you people that voted for Meier.

The pot holes do need fixed. Jacked my car up at night on a bad one on Beech between Penn and 10th. Gravel is not suitable

Caflisch wanted to keep using asphalt that is cheaper and would work. I didn't read anywhere that anyone wanted to use gravel. Those potholes have been bad for years and Mickey didn't want to do anything so why is he so worried about them now? It's all nuts.

Dig out the bad holes, put in asphalt and ROLL them to make them flat. That is what those big rollers are for. Won't cost $50,000.

The boys at the city don't want to bring out the right roller because it's to hard to clean up.Because of that we first put up with horrible potholes and now are going to have to put up with $50000 potholes. Don't think Mike Passauer knows the first thing about what he's doing.Bring back some of the old street employees who know how to do things right and let them do it, then get a city manager who also would know how to do it right and demand it gets done.Does Mickey know anything about anything?

All three voted yes on this one. Even Saint Leonard, your saviour. The idea is to put a good fix on the north side lanes as it will bear ALL the traffic while the south half and utilities are worked on. A concrete fix will not memorize the holes back in two or three months like an asphalt patch. Unless you would like to be beat to death some more driving down that mess.

You are 100% wrong that Leonard Caflisch voted for the concrete repair of the potholes. Check the records from the meeting or check the Reporter's account of the meeting and you will find Leonard voted NO, and Meier and Unruh voted YES. Since water under the street is the cause of the potholes there's no guarantee the concrete fix won't fail too.

The city THINKS the work will begin on the south side of Main, but they admitted they have no guarantee of it. It could begin on the north side depending on KDOT. Even if the work does begin on the south side, some of the new concrete in the potholes will probably have to be cut out so new utility lines can be run north to south across West Main.

You should probably know what you're talking about before you put down the opinions of people who do know what's going on.

Yes, it is true that the best way to get the potholes as smooth as possible is after putting down several layers of ashphalt and tamping each layer down thoroughly to compress it, is to bring out the roller the City owns and finish it off smoothly. Yes, the City owns the proper equipment to fix the potholes right.
Yes, it is also true that the reason the roller isn't brought out is because the City employees don't want to clean the roller up after they use it. Laziness to clean the roller is a key reason why the potholes are so rough and that is not a good reason to spend $50,000 on concrete.
Fred Meier's decision to spend $50,000 was quite disappointing and irresponsible. He needs to start thinking with a little common sense and stop thinking like he is spending Free Money. Old habits formed from the last 20 years of recklessly spending money at the School District and being trained and influenced by the Master Obama-like Big Wasteful Spender Chuck Schmidt who never said no to any bill as long as he had Taxpayers Free Money in his pocket.
If Mike Passauer had any balls he'd make sure all road crew employees knew how to fix the potholes right and make sure they did fix them right. There is no excuse for Don't Know or Too Lazy. If Mike Passauer is too stupid or lazy to make his road crew fix the potholes right, them his boss Micky Webb needs to do it. If Webb is too stupid or lazy to make Passauer and the road crew fix the potholes right, the City Commission needs to make Webb and Passauer fix the potholes right and then not renew Webb's contract.
While it is understandable why potholes form because of leaky water pipes ruining the base under the road, there is no understandable and common sense reason why the potholes are as rough as they are. Throwing a shovel full of asphalt in a pothole and running a truck tire over it is not the way to fix potholes right. Too Stupid or Too Lazy is not acceptable. We are tired of driving over rough potholes and now seeing Fred cluelessly wasting $50,000 to do a short term fix. Fix the Potholes right or get someone in charge who will.

We elect White to represent us and he and one of his workers cash in thousands of dollars off one of our places. We elect Unruh and Meier to save us money and they throw $50000 in a pothole. We pay Passauer to keep our streets up and he either doesn't know how or doesn't care enough to keep them up.We pay Webb to watch things and make sure there run right but a commissioner not getting paid a dime finds tons of things our money would have been wasted on if he'd just took Webb's advice. No matter what we do we always lose when it comes to this place and our money. What can we do to change that?Don't tell me elect new people because that doesn't work either.Maybe get rid of Webb then look at some of the other useless wonders to get rid of.This craps got to stop before we go broke.

In order to get rid of Webb the town would have had to elected town commissioners who were willing to get rid of Webb. In other words, a majority of commissioners who were willing to remove Webb from town manager. Also, Webb's contract would probably have to be bought out for the remainder of his term unless just cause could be proven that he was not doing his job. I am not a lawyer to you would have to ask a legal person about the preceding but that would be my guess. Basically, you are now stuck with Webb at least until the next elections for town commissioners. In the mean time I truly hope the town of Independence does not go bankrupt through continued inept policies.

Ok all you people irritated Fred Meier got through the $50000 pothole throw away, let's go to the city commission meeting this Thursday and let the boys know we think that stinks. All you people that voted for Meier need to send in $50-$1000 in to the pothole relief fund if the $50000 plan stands, since your old pal Meier was the one that thought it was a great idea. The rest of us shouldn't have to pay for your bad pick and this could be only the start to his big spending ways.

Saw Bob Pierce's ad about the 50 grand pothole fix and the commission meeting in tonights paper. Couldn't Webb or Passauer come up with a better plan than the $50,000 concrete one? Isn't that what we're paying them for? I say take some of their salary and pay someone who could tell the commission the best thing to do.One big waste after another and Mickey still got a big raise on us.
