I am soooo freekin pissy right now... I cannot even think straight. Why do people think they can bully people around because they work for the county??? Do they really think because they are the county recorder that they can tell me I cannot park in handicapped parking lot???? REALLY??? I think not!!! I am going to do something about it when I calm down enough to think rationally! I can't believe the nerve of some people. I guess when I file a lawsuit for handicap discrimination.... It may stop some of the prejudiceness going inside of the county!

Well, it might depend on whether your car had a handicap tag or placard displayed on it. If it didn't, then you do not have the right to park there regardless of how handicapped you are. So say Kansas statutes.

What happened and do you have a handicap tag?

I have a handicap tag in my car at all times. I lay it on the dash board so that it doesn't get broken. I place the handicap permit on dash because the handle is broken so it may not go over the rear view mirror but it is still lying on the dash. I have a rainbow cross that is on the corner of my permit. I will place the permit in a more visual place if there seems to be a reason to display out of concern. I am rarely in the county longer than 15 minutes. If I am there longer than 15 minutes it is because I am taking care of personal business. Otherwise I sit in the parking spot waiting for the person that I am meeting. I still have my parking permit in hands reach. For any person to make comment that I may not park in a handicap parking spot to pick up a fellow employee of the county is crazy!!! I have the right to use any handicap parking in which I chose to utilize. If the county can refuse to hire me because they do not feel that I am physically capable of doing a job… then the next county worker wants to complain that I am using the handicap parking…. Which way is it? Do they recognize that I am handicap or not?

Who told you not to park there?

What originally caused me to be handicapped was an auto accident. I was pinned in the vehicle by the steering column that had broken from the frame of the SUV. From the L1 down was literally shattered. I was life lined by a jet to Little Rock, Arkansas from Bentonville, Arkansas. My S1 was severed in the accident from all of the brakes. I had over 25 brakes in my pelvic bones alone. The specialist gave me two shot of cement to help stabilize my bones because of all of the other medical problems was going on at the time. I had a huge whole in me about the size of a 16 oz. canned vegetable completely through my right hip. I have done extremely well considering everything. I am no longer paralyzed... my S1 grew back together. I am able to walk!!! The fact that I am able to walk is a miracle of its own. I have two steel rods in my spine, with a spine stimulator connected. When I use this I should have a cane. I chose not to use a cane. I try to hide my disability as much as possible. I choose not to spread my business normally. I am normally a very private person. But for someone to tell the employee that I have to park on the north side of the building and not to use the handicap parking because someone is complaining is crazy!!! It is none of their business what is wrong with me. It is called HIPPA! They need to focus on their jobs and not what others are doing or not doing. This is just my personal thoughts... just saying.

If you are picking up someone, isn't the courthouse about ready to close?

If you are just parking, what is the big deal? A person that actually might have to get in and out of a vehicle that is handicapped might have to do without because you are taking up a space that they could have used for access.

Just because you have a handicap placard displayed doesn't mean that HAVE to park in a handicap spot; You may park anywhere anyone else could legally park. Don't abuse the system by taking up a place just to park and wait on your friend.

I have the right to park in the disability parking spot!!! I am deemed disabled. Just because I can walk, doesn't mean I shouldn't use the handicap parking spot. It means that I am having a good day. Yes, I can park anywhere I want. And I chose where I want to park. So if I chose to park there... I have the permit to do so. There are two disability parking spots and there is never anyone around when I use them. I have frequent muscle spasms in which are very severe. If my specialists think that I am disabled and have deemed me disabled for life!!! Who is to question that, which works at the county or state?

Only if you're the one getting out and walking in. If your waiting on a able bodied person to walk out no you have no right. My opinion.

I'm not questioning the fact that you are handicapped, but I am questioning your descision to just park in a handicap parking spot just to be waiting on your able bodied friend. I could find nothing in Kansas Statutes Anotated that you says you can just park there and not exit the vehicle.

Please note that the law does state that a placard is required to be hung from the rear view mirror while it is displayed. It is also supposed to be removed from the mirror while the vehicle is being driven, but I see dozens of them hanging on the mirror while the vehicle is in motion. I suspect this is not ridgidly enforced. I see nothing wrong with the way yours is displayed on the dash as long as it is visible to the outside of the vehile.

Please give consideration for those that might need that spot that you are parking in to pick your friend up. I have no problem with you parking in a handicap spot if you are actually going to get out of the car. More power to you, and my hat is off to you for getting out and enjoying life. Remember, there are others in the same place you are and they could be circling the block looking for an available space that you are using just to sit in your car and wait for your friend to arrive. Please be considerate of other disabled persons...and have a nice day...

I thought about this last night. Your friend is the one that is going to put up with the grief since they have to work at the courthouse and they probably need the job. Do them a favor and park on the north side to wait for them and let them come out to the car. You may not like it but it might be the best for your friend.

Those handicap parking places are not for you to just sit in and wait for an abled body person to walk to your vehicle. They are for handicap ACCESS, which you clearly DID NOT NEED. Why do you being handicap and having a sticker need to park in that spot for someone to walk to and from your vehicle? How did parking in that spot make things easier for you? How did it help you have access to the building more easily when you weren't even planning on getting out and accessing the building? Stop being so selfish and totally rediculous with your whining about how you have a sticker to SIT where you want and stop blocking those that need the spot for ACCESS!

I do not know if I am going to enter the building or not. If I chose to use the handicap spot I will. If I chose to park in the middle of the drive while they are entering the vehicle then I will.

If your talking about the west side of the building that houses the Tag Office, etc And your there just to pick up a person who is not handicapped, I hope that your waiting period is only a few minutes. I have a handicapped tag and I do rely on the handicapped space to go in and do my business. Going there is not one of my favorite activites. I like to do my business and get out.

Now, if your going in to do your business, well feel free to camp out there, i guess.

You are not entitled to use a handicap acessibility stall for a drop off pick up convenience. Those stalls are for handicapped people that need acess them selfs to the facilities, not a loading zone for your spouse. If I see you doing it, I personally will call an officer and sign a citation to have you ticketed... Problem solved!
