Fire of unknown origin consumed a pair of downtown Independence businesses prior to the start of the Neewollah Doo Dah Parade Thursday evening (Oct. 23). At about 5:50 p.m., smoke and flames billowed from the Independence News and Wagon Wheel Tavern located on West Main Street, just one block off the parade route. Downtown Independence was filled with several thousand spectators awaiting the start of the parade at 6 p.m., and firefighters and police officers had to deal with throngs of people as they dealt with the fire and traffic control. The newspaper, which was heavily damaged by fire more than 10 years ago, and the tavern appear to be heavily damaged. Because of the brisk winds blowing Thursday evening, smoke from the fire traveled throughout the downtown business district, shrouding the parade entries and numerous spectators with smoke and soot. Firefighters from Independence Fire Department and Montgomery County Rural Fire Department extinguished the blaze some 30 minutes after arriving on the scene. Emergency officials in Independence could not be contacted for further information Thursday night

Thank you so much. I had heard that the fire had taken place, but I didn't have any specifics. An organization I belong to is supposed to set up a booth right around in there and I am wondering if we are going to be able to do that now. How close is that to O'Riellys?

O'Reillys is on the west end of the block, the furniture store is just next door east and the Wagon Wheel is next door to that with the newspaper building at the back of the lot next to it. The Wagon Wheel looks to be HEAVILY damaged as well as the newpaper building. They had the door open to the used furniture store with fans pulling out the smoke. Someone told me the Wagon Wheel wasn't open when it started so she didn't believe anyone was in there and hurt, thank heavens. I don't know if you've ever been in there but it's long and shotgun like and it could've been a disaster if there had been a lot of people in there trying to get out(and they usually draw a big crowd during Neewollah).

Saturday, investigators said the fire they were calling "suspicious" is indeed a case of arson.

After interviewing several witnesses, Independence Police Department detectives were able to identify a suspect. A 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged with arson. He was taken to a juvenile detention center.

The case will be referred to the Juvenile Division of the Montgomery County Attorney's office for prosecution.

The fire started around 5:30 Thursday evening and caused extensive damage to several businesses including a bar and a newspaper office.

The Independence Police Department says a fire broke out just minutes before the start of the annual Doo-Dah Parade. The parade is part of the Neewollah Festival.

Detective Harry Smith says businesses on West Main were damaged.
The Wagon Wheel Club was reported as a total loss. The offices of
The Independence News also had extensive damage.

Two other businesses -- a furniture store and a pawn shop -- had
water damage.

Smith says there were no reports of injuries. Damage estimates are at least $200,000

Independence News shack that was next to the wheel. After seeing no one was in it, unless they we being cremated, I went to see if anyone was in the wheel. It was locked and dark. A lady was calling 911 on her cell. I stood out front and tried to get a respnder to come up the sidewalk, but they would not. So I left, because if you know me, I'd end up getting blamed for the damn thing.

So, what I saw, was the Indep. News burn down and it re-started later and wrecked the bar.

Thanks a Million!

Isn't that Sad !( So I left, because if you know me, I'd end up getting blamed for the damn thing.) This is a prime example of why We don't help one another any more, Speaking with the younger generation Some how they have the wrong idea as to why not to report a crime they may have witness. Now as to why our crime rate has doubled in this Mongomery County allow me to ask the people here that read this a few questions , DO you think it's right to be blamed or sue for not reporting a crime you see or witness ? and what should be done to those that walk away from a crime.? We have No super hero's in this town or state In fear of being Convicted for a crime they didn't commit. how many people are in prison today for a crime they didn't commit ? Do you believe our justic System is Fair in this State alone ? the appeal rate from our inmates in our prison system today has grown in the highest numbers out of the top ten States we are 4th state costing tax payers thousands of dollars every year. I can think of better things to spend our tax on can't you ? What's wrong out there People think about it !

As U stated It was in the Indy News Shed next to the bar. I ran past that and saw no one was in it. I saw someone call 911. I checked the bar for patrons. First responders arrived, paying no attention to suggestions, so I left. So, you cannot use my post as a social commentary on the sad state of humanity.

My point is that this re-started and damaged the wagon wheel.

Hey Six Pack, what's up? The last fire that was about 10 yrs. ago was set by Slappy McCabe. After they kicked him out of the Wheel, and he was trying to burn it down, but got the wrong bldg.

It's nice to see your smiling face, Zach. These people here in Indy haven't changed, don't even trip on what they have to say, good luck.

Six Pack? Suddenly this forum has potential for much humor to ensue. heheh

I come here occasionally when I feelin' all nostalgic an stuff.

Slappy couldn't pour piss out of a boot with directions written on the heel.

He might deserve his own thread. LMAO

Hell I remember watching the Chevy Garage burn down in 1974 (where O'reilly's is). Larry Joseph was hollerin' at the firemen to save the wheel that time, too.

Tell me when this thread is updated:
