Well I hope not.

Would be nice, then maybe folks in the area wouldn't get cancer from all the crap they keep burning illegally. We have too many funny heath problems that get worse the closer one lives to the plant.

I've heard yes, but I've also heard no. So I'm not sure what to believe. Hopefully someone in the know will comment. Barbara Hinthorn worked there for years, and years she was the sweetest
lady, but the woman that took her place isn't very friendly, and I don't think she is very smart either. I hear no one can even stand to look at her.
If someone has any knowledge of the plant let us know, this town needs that ole plant.

We don't burn anything illegally, we stopped burning hazard waste in 1999. Which was not burned
illegally. How close could one live to the plant?
Cement Street! I've lived here all my life no funny health problems, also I've worked there for 36 years. So unless you know what your talking about SHUT UP! If you do know what your talking about call and report it. There are Gov. Agencies that inspect this plant at least twice a year, in which they spend appox. 6-7 weeks at the plant per inspection.
Still an employee

I will repeat what OLD FRIEND wrote, we do not burn anything illegally. To my knowledge never have. Hmm - Not real sure what your talking about
but would be more than happy to discuss it with you. There was no link to the cancer rate in this area and the cement plant, study done about 5-6 years ago. The study was done by a Gov. regulated agency. As far as Barbara Hithorn goes you are correct, she was/is a gem of a lady. But all employees would probably agree with you about Paula, the person who took Barbara's place. Nothing comparable about the two. Paula is an ASS.
So hmm, if there are questions ask, don't speculate.

I hope the plant doesn't close. But I'll give you guys getting ready to retire some cheap advise, start your paper stuff as early as possible, Paula is horrible, she will lie to you, she is so forgetful she lost my paper work, I had to fill it out twice. They should fire her, should have years ago.

I was in Independence a couple of weeks ago, I heard everything was going well out at the Plant,
and they would be there for a long, long time. I pray that the plant is open for another 100yrs. My grandfather and father both retired from there. Good luck, guys and gals.....

I heard it was account he city would not allow a road to be build to some more land and some kind of tax break.
And the owners ofthe cmpany said shut it down, after 103 years of running.

Well not entirely true. The plant never, I repeat never requested tax breaks. The issue with the road closing was the plant owned the property on both sides of the road, they asked for the road to be closed for the purpose of quarrying through the road. The County Commissioners rejected the request, because the inconvience it was going to cause a couple of farmers who use the road for short cuts to crop fields. Had the commission closed the road it would have allowed 50yrs of extended Quarry life. Would it have kept the plant running? We will never know. I can't say it would've kept the plant operating, but I can't say it wouldn't have either. I think it was a poor decision by the commission, jobs over convience. You tell me?

Old friend is being called out. You live in Wichita right? I live here too. I also know people personally that live near the plant none of which have or had any wierd health problems. I think you need to pay attention to the problems in the Air Cap

Http. I live as close as one can to the plant and worked there for many years. The plant stopped burning 'Hazardous Waste'(paint thinner, petrolem based liquids, etc..) everthing causes cancer these days, no arguement there. The material the plant uses CKD(CEMENT KILN DUST) is burned through a kiln, then what doesn't get burned goes through the system again, and again, its the best process for recycling that what we do, recycle dirt until all minerals are burnt out of it. To blame the plant for people getting sick is, I guess your right, but not fact based. You have nothing that could support your statement. I am not saying that maybe someone you know that lives near the plant became ill, and you couldn't figure out why, and since the plant sits right there, one might say "oh, its the plant". For this county, this town to loose 110 of the best paying jobs around, hurts this community, I don't care what you say. So let me guess, next year when your taxes go up to make up for the taxes the plant pays you'll complain, about that.
