I lived in Independence KS as a child , my father was the Army recruiter from 1971-1977.( he had dunces died from Cancer). We looked forward to Halloween every year. I have only been back once since then, this year I am planing on bringing my children to celebrate Neellowah !!! Do they still have a carnival ? Also what is the beat day , Saturday ?
Please DO come, we love our Neewollah visiors. Saturday is a great day, but the most crowded day. Of course, that's when the parade is... the carnival will be set up then too. Hope you enjoy it as much as we always do. P.S. Be sure and try the food stands; the guy who sets up in front of Uncle Jack's Restaurant makes the world's best curly fries.

Overpriced food, third-rate talent to perform, and tweeker carnies? Sounds like a great place to take the whole family.

I'll be there with my family, I know ever town has it's good and bad. I like to look at the glass half full. I loved going to Tico-taco (sp) as a child , is it still there. And the zoo? Is it still around? And the train we use to ride in the park , I just remembered the Merry-go-round?

Then you'd better hurry, or you'll miss Dalton Defender Days.

I used to know an Army recruiter back in the early or mid 1980's. I'm sure of his name. I thought about joining the Army back then but never did. But you said you were here in the mid to late 70's?

The worse part about neewollah is probably the queen competition. Some of those girls have an honest talent but skits get asked back. That piano girl last year was great. I'm a music major and that was a college level piece but I heard she didn't get asked back?! The ballerina girl was pretty great too, glad she got asked back at least.

I figure if a skit is all they can do, they don't have any other real talent. So, if they can play the piano really well, or sing well, then those are the ones who should win talent at least.

Yes, I totally agree about the queen, "talent", competition. However, I thought about it and maybe the girls with the least amount of talent get picked, because this competition is the only one they will win in their lives. The pianist and dancers will go on to do great things. I think maybe the judges are just having a pity party.

It seems that the girls who have a fairly decent talent piece aren't the ones that get asked back or are the ones that don't get anything. I can't help but seriously wonder if these "out of town" judges still aren't clued in about these girls (especially the "popular" ones). I know anybody involved with Neewollah would deny this but one just can't help but wonder.
