Anybody know what happened today?...Saw a big truck and a car that wrecked at the 169 160 jct. Didn't look good. Looked like the car ran the stop sign in front of a big truck that was southbound...Happened around 3 pm or so.

I understand it was a fellow by the name of Bud Sands in the car. He didn't make it.

They were still trying to clean up the wreck 3 hours after it happend. The way that car looked you knew right away it was a fatality.7 mile cornner is nonforgiving people need to pay very close attention to what they are doing when they go across the roads. My sympathyies to the victims family and to the truck driver.

I'm sorry for the family of the driver of the car and they have my sympathy,, but my heart really goes out to the truck driver.. He will never forget and will always be saying "if only". My prayers are with him...

I hate that intersection and aways worry when I see a car at the stop sign as I approach it...

Glad I'm retired...stuff like that gives me nightmares. I never liked that intersection either...It goes to show you that regardless of the number of sighns and flashing lights that are put up, you have to be on your toes at all times when you are driving. The closest I ever came to an accident while driving a rig was a couple of years ago when someone passed me and pulled right into the lane even with my front bumper. Fortunately for the both of us the old air brakes worked...cell phone usage and no mirror on the passenger side.

Some of folks drive over the road carriers. How do you feel about the roundabouts? In Kansas, they never appear to make the large enough for trucks. Do they increase safety? Heading east from Wichita, the one at Fredonia seems to sneak up on me, especially at night. Just like some other opinions for those of you who know more about these than I do.

You may have noticed on some of the center circles big tire ruts from the duals on large truck trailers. Depending on the axle spread on some trailers to achieve legal weight distribution, some trailers may not turn as easily on sharp bends. Experienced drivers may not have as much trouble getting around a roundabout but beginners can be in for a difficult time if the trailer gets off the pavement in bad weather. KDOT has added a "cheater" sidewalk around the circular part of the roundabout, but in my opinion, the things are just too small of a radius for some large trucks. The plus side is that everybody at the intersection is operating at a slow speed and you don't usually have to worry about hitting another vehicle. The only problem I see other than small radius is that you are going to find some drivers that have never seen one yet. I have seen a couple of cars headed the wrong way a time or two. Until they get to be a more common occurance on roads, it bears watching.

Everyone drive safe...and watch out for the other driver...

My condolences to the Sands family; he will be missed...

Roundabouts are ok if you pay attention to them and they need to be lighted too. There is one over by the casino that if west and south of Joplin and you have the HARDEST time seeing at night and especially when it's raining. They need to light ALL THE ROUNDABOUTS....

Nothing I'm afraid will ever replace common sense and good driving awareness! It doesnt matter how mistake proof you make an intersection its still up to the drivers to be aware and be carefull! I cannot imagine not looking both ways before crossing a state highway! They have flashing lights at that intersection and still accidents happen! I had not heard about the accident until just now reading topix. My wife and I traveled through that intersection today with my grandson in the car! I looked very hard and several times before crossing the southbound lane knowing the crossings history. Sorry to hear about this accident and I feel for the families involved!

i drove by hours after it had happened and what i saw was unforgettable. my boyfriend drives to work everyday out of town and i pray for his safe arrival and safe return. the way that car looked made me not want to call it a car at all. it was heartbreaking to see. my heart and prayers go out to the families of the people involved in the wreck. i also want to thank the brave officers and medics as well as road workers who had to be so close to this tragic story. God bless you all.

Bud was one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. His wife said he left this world doing what he loved to do, driving in his new convertible! You will be missed.
