Someone was telling me that outside Fredonia, where Candlerock is now, that it used to be the poor farm. Does anyone else know anything about the history of this place ?

I havent heard of the poor farm. Is this a term for a type of facility since Fredonia has one? Interesting stuff!

Thanks Andy... I do have the records from the county, all 6 of them.:) But the library and museum both have a thick file, which I am tackling now.... a lot of news articles on "hearings," changes in management, etc. The current owner was once ordered to fence the cemetery and maintain the easement to it, but he has not done so. I am hopeful that if it were mowed down, maybe there would be a few stones. Did you take any pictures?
Hi, I'm looking for records of gr grandmother at Independence, KS Poor Farm. Her name was Maude Marie Lewis. I believe she was there in the 1890's. Thanks!

Actually the county is responsible for maintenance. the owner only has to provide a five foot wide section to the cemetery. anyone on that property is trespassing and will be held accountable as it is privately owned. and has been since the fifties.

I also don't appreciate giving out directions to people who have no business there. the place has been destroyed enough by vandals.

Does anyone have records of the graves documented to get a list of who is buried where for the cemetery at the poor farm?

Not sure who is posting as Cal Taylor but I do know he passed away in 1960 so it isn't him. He was my great grandfather and his name shouldn't be used. If you were really in touch with some of his relation I would love to know who because as far as I know I am the only one who was here when he lived here. If you really want to know about Cal Taylor I would be glad to tell you what I remember but will not give info here for obvious reasons.

Unfortunately we need poor farms all over... Oh wait, they call them small towns, or cities here in the backwoods of Kansas
