Here's something entertaining to do while your not having a good time. Penwell charges 4,200 total for a funeral...yeah, I know, get the vaseline, but it's still less than potts.... and there is fine print that they will match a lower price and lower it 10%. But, Penwell in Coffeyville is already 400 less. So ask them why and tell them you want that price....and that would still be more than the other one in coffeyville.

Seems like Penwell Gable is charging less in Coffeyville to compete with the David Barns mortuary. The Independence people should be pretty upset with paying more than their Coffeyville counterparts.

The Penwell funeral home in Coffeyville is a joke. All new people and very unprofessional.

was at Jerry Mercer's Funeral yesterday and let me just say that Larry Rodrick was very rude.. There was stand up room only and we were standing up back there and he came thru there looking like a sour puss and then at one point he wanted the book and he just hollered across there (in the middle of the service I might add)HAND ME THE BOOK.. HAND ME THAT BOOK... how rude!! if you ever use this funeral home I would ask them in advance if Larry is going to be in a good mood that day or if he is going to wake up and eat his cheerios after someone pisses in them. shame on that funeral home..

No one thinks of what goes on in a funeral home when the directors are done "soothing" the family with an $8,000 bill. Face it, these are bottom line businesses. The more you spend, the more attention you get from the staff. It literally comes down to the nickels and dimes of whether you're going to get cookies for the visitation.$6,000 bill, you don't get no cookies.$10,000 will get you two dozen cookies. They do market trends and price comparisons with their competitors to see who's "winning" and adjust their business plan accordingly. I think I'll just have my family build a bonfire and then scatter me to the wind.....

Since I'm on the east coast, they're going to chuck me in the ocean and I'll become fish food.

My slected local funeral home will allow me to provide my own casket and has volunteered to store it until needed. I have been sized up by the local Amish and it will cost $200.00. Just saved $4,800 by doing it myself. There are ways around overspending after death. Some have to think "out side the box". No pun intended.

Wally, I would be surprised if they will store a casket for you until you kick the bucket. Why would they keep an item for years when they didn't make any profit from it?

I looked at some guidelines on the National Funeral Directors Association website and they states that it is a law that the funeral home must accept any third party casket but nothing about storage.

Might want to check with them again.

Besides with the change of ownership happening every few years I wouldn't want to trust them with my casket storage.

Good point. I think I will take your advice and get it in writing. It would bring me back from the grave if my attempt at saving money would be used against me after I go and my surviving family had to pay storage fees. thanks again....

We need to go back to the old day ways and lay our loved one out on the dining room table and have a little service....maybe that would make everyone happy and it sure as hell would cost less. Now not for nothing, but if we do, i'm at least hiring someone to dig the hole!

In October, 2008,(years ago, huh?) former penwell gabel-coffeyville mgr Steve Wilson, was arrested at Potts fh, where he worked, for child molestation, later admitting to necrophilia, and sentenced to life.
