Has anyone noticed constant low frequency humming sound in Antonia homes? It sounds like a generator of some kind. Is this coming from the nearby quarry?

while searching the internet i found your comment, i have been hearing a low hum every night for months here in Idaho. I went as far as to try ear plugs a few evenings ago, absolutely no change? I open the window and can hear it, but no one but me notices?

I live in Barnhart in the Parkton subdivision. I have noticed this for about 2 years now. It sounds like a train idleing on the nearby tracks. I have even went out and drove around trying to find it. I checked the river for a tugboat running and all along the tracks from Arnold to pevely and NOTHING. I notice that it is worse in the winter. I thought maybe it was from I-55. But have decided that this is not it either.

I remember a few years ago, there was a story on one of the educational channels about how our goverment uses ELF signals to communicate with our subs when they are submerged. They interviewed a few people that were "sensitive" to the sound waves and could hear them. Of course the government DENIES their claims. Makes you wonder?!

I have a question for anyone who hears this. Is your house sitting directly on a rock formation? I know our house is. They had to chip out a level spot on a granite formation to pour the foundation. If the government is using some sort of ELF(extremly low frequency) signal, I wonder if it is a digitaly encoded soundwave instead of a radio frequency? Sound propogates easily through water for great distances and radio waves do not. This is something I have been pondering.

The sound you might be hearing could be from the Center Point and Mississippi transmission line. It carries natural gas and in the winter the colder it get the more of a demand for gas is therefore there is more fuel going through the line nad it makes a loud humming noise. The line travels along metropolitan blvd in this areasouth through Pevely and into herculaneum.

I live in Arnold and have heard this HUM for about 2 1/2 years. There was a lot of construction near my home, new subsdivisions, and a lot of trees knocked down. I wonder if that has anything to do with the noise from the can company carrying. It seems worst in winter, but I have also noticed it loud in the summer. My sleep is really disturbed and I try to run a fan but the noise is louder than the fan..When I sit on the parking lot of the can company I can hear the hum coming from the equipment on the roof.

I don't know what the deal is. It has been terrible the last couple weeks. Especially between 2 and 5 a.m. I was in the bathroom about 3 this morning and you could feel vibrations from it in the walls.

it there any way we could complain about this and would it do any good?
I've noticed it being louder in the past weeks, especially at night. Very intrusive...it's just always there, never stops.
I try to ignore it, but it tain't easy.:)

I don't know who to complain to about it. You're right, it has been getting worse! Do you live in a house or apartment Liz? What part of town?

IS it possible that the rumblings you are hearing are from New Madrid quake zone?

I live in Pittsburgh, PA - and found this while searching for an answer to the droning noise that keeps me awake between 2 and 5 some nights, but no one else in my family can hear. I have driven around my neighborhood at 3 am to locate the source. I can't hear it when I open my window, but it's not from inside the house. I did some quick internet research, and it seems to be a widespread problem and is officially called "the hum" or the "Taos hum." Google this and see how much info is out there.

I know pretty much about geography and a fault zone would not cause this.

This is a persistant and continuous sound. It is very low frequency and most people cannot hear it. Those of us who do, can tell you it is very aggravating.

Nic,

Couple questions:

Do you live close to an interstate highway?

Do you live in a house or apartment?

Do you know if the building is sitting on bedrock?

Rabid Dog,

I also live in Parkton, but I don't hear anything. Do you have a transformer in or near your yard that could be causing the humming sound?

No. I have discounted this also. The year before last when we had the big Ice storm, everyone had lost power and there was very little traffic on 55. We had built a fire in the downstairs fireplace and I remember there was NO difference in the sound all night long. Up until that point, I thought it was the highway, the electrical grid, neighbors stuff or something else close by. There was no power for miles in any direction and that told me it is NOT anything local. I cannot here it outside. It's almost like it is comming up through the ground. I notice when I travel that most places I cannot hear it. I have spent the night at my brothers house who lives in Imperial hills (several miles away) and do not hear it there. I do know his house is built on soil and NOT directly on bedrock.

I do find this intriguing. I live in Imperial Hills, and we hear nothing here, although every time the quarry blasts, my house shakes. Our foundation is about 6 inches above rock.

I'm wondering if the humming noise is traveling from something miles away. Years ago, when my older kids were little, I was standing on the playground at Antonia Elementary waiting for them to dismiss. The ground shook and we heard a booming sound (like an explosion) that seemed to travel along New Hwy M. I found out shortly thereafter, a house had exploded in the Bayberry Subdivision at that time. As you know, Bayberry and Antonia Elementary school are nowhere near each other, and I'm thinking about 6-7 miles apart.

If the sound seems to be coming "out from the ground," I'm wondering what's buried nearby. Could be a gas line? Do you live near Freer? Do they heat that building with natrual gas, propane,or electric?
